ESU Women’s Basketball Posts 69-60 Win over Cheyney

EAST STROUDSBURG - Senior forward Jessica Martin had 17 points and 10 rebounds and sophomore forward Allison Howard added 14 points, leading East Stroudsburg University to a 69-60 win over Cheyney in PSAC East women's basketball on Saturday afternoon at Koehler Fieldhouse.

ESU (10-13, 9-10) started the game on a 14-2 run and moves into fourth in the PSAC East, one-half game ahead of Kutztown for a home game in the first round of the PSAC Tournament. The top six teams qualify for the tournament, with the No. 3 and No. 4 teams hosting first-round games on Saturday, February 28.
 
Martin had her fourth double-double of the season and the 25th of her career, shooting 6-for-9 from the field and 5-for-8 at the foul line.

Howard had 14 points and seven rebounds, junior guard Helena Gemmell scored 11 points and junior guard Tyeca Reviere had seven points for the Warriors.

Kia Whitley-Duncan scored 21 points and Taschell Phillips had 12, both off the bench, to lead Cheyney (4-20, 4-15).

ESU led 14-2 at the 13:02 mark of the first half, then used a late push to lead 37-28 at halftime.

The Warriors built their lead to 17 points (45-28) with an 8-0 run in the first five minutes of the second half.

Cheyney closed a 15-point margin to eight with a minute to go, but the Warriors forced a turnover and kept the Wolves at arms length.

ESU shot 47.3 percent (26-for-55) from the field, held a 34-29 rebounding edge and a 24-16 advantage in turnovers.

Cheyney shot 47.9 percent (23-for-48) but was hampered by its 24 turnovers, including 14 in the first half.

The Warriors have won eight straight and nine of their last 10 against Cheyney, including a 61-56 road win on January 14 behind Martin's 14 points and 11 rebounds.

ESU is seeking its third straight PSAC Tournament appearance after reaching the first round in 2013 and the quarterfinals in 2014.

The Warriors travel to second-place West Chester (19-4, 15-4) on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. tip. They head to Mansfield (3-21, 2-18) next Saturday and host Kutztown (10-14, 9-11) on Wednesday, February 25 to finish the regular season.
