ESU Softball Drops Doubleheader at West Chester

WEST CHESTER - West Chester scored seven runs in the fifth inning to post an 11-3 win in the nightcap and take both ends of a PSAC East softball doubleheader against East Stroudsburg University on Sunday.

Sophomore Rachael Liguori held WCU to two hits in the opener but the Warriors fell, 2-1, on a two-run homer by Laura Altenburger in the fourth inning.

ESU (9-6, 2-2), coming off a sweep at Shippensburg in its divisional opener last Tuesday, outhit West Chester (20-8, 6-2) by a 12-9 margin but the Golden Rams hit three home runs.

ESU senior outfielder Cara Woods hit her third career home run in the second game, pulling the Warriors within 4-3 in the top of the fourth inning.

Woods was 4-for-5 with a double and a homer, senior 1B Cara McNeil was 3-for-6 and freshman 3B Mary Wallick was 3-for-7 with a double and two RBI for ESU in the doubleheader.

Wallick pushed her season average to .471 (24-for-51) with a team-high seven extra-base hits and 12 runs scored.

Liguori fell to 4-2 in the opener, posting a 1.05 ERA in 46.2 innings. She has completed five of her six starts and pitched in 10 games overall.

Game 1 - L 2-1

Liguori didn't allow a hit until Altenburger's two-out, two-run homer in the fourth inning gave West Chester a 2-0 lead.

ESU left two runners on base in the first, second and sixth innings before breaking through in the seventh.

Junior Haley Thomas drew a pinch-hit walk, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on an RBI single by Wallick before West Chester got out of the inning.

Amanda Houck improved to 8-2 in the circle for West Chester, allowing one run on seven hits.

Liguori struck out five and walked one for ESU. McNeil and Woods had two hits each.

Game 2 - L 11-3 (5 inn.)

West Chester scored two runs in the first and third innings before scoring seven in the fifth.

Wallick had a two-out RBI single to score Woods in the second inning, and Woods belted a two-run homer in the top of the fourth for the Warriors.

Micaela McSpadden hit a two-run homer in the third and Altenburger had a two-run homer, her second of the day, in the fifth inning for WCU.

Wallick and Woods both had two hits for ESU.
