KUTZTOWN - Junior Allison Mende threw a four-hitter for her first career shutout in a 3-0 win in game one as East Stroudsburg University split a PSAC East softball doubleheader at Kutztown on Wednesday.

Kutztown (17-5, 5-1) won the nightcap, 4-0, as Savannah Nierintz improved to 12-0 on the season.

Sophomore SS Rae Holden was 5-for-6 for ESU in the doubleheader, including an RBI double in a three-run third inning in game one. Senior OF Kasey Meckes had the go-ahead two-RBI double earlier in the frame.

ESU (10-7, 3-3) ended Kutztown's six-game winning streak in the opener.

The Warriors are scheduled to host Mansfield in a PSAC East doubleheader on Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Zimbar Field.

Game 1 - W 3-0

Mende struck out six, walked one and allowed just four hits to win a pitchers' duel with Dominique Ficara.

Kutztown managed to put just two runners in scoring position, one in both of the first two innings. Mende got two strikeouts with a runner on second base and one out to close the first and second frames.

ESU struck for three runs in the third as freshman OF Katherine Liedberg had a leadoff double, freshman 3B Mary Wallick singled and Meckes hit a two-run double to give the Warriors the lead before being thrown out at third.

Senior 1B Cara McNeil and Holden hit consecutive two-out doubles to push the lead to 3-0.

Kutztown had two hits in the fourth but the leadoff batter was thrown trying to stretch a single into a double. Mende retired the side in order in the fifth, pitched around a one-out single in the sixth and a leadoff error in the seventh to close the shutout.

Meckes was 3-for-4 and Holden was 2-for-3 to produce five of ESU's nine hits.

Ficara threw 5.1 innings (9 hits, 3 runs) for Kutztown.

Game 2 - L 4-0

Nierintz improved to 12-0 with a 0.88 ERA for Kutztown, throwing her second shutout of the season.

The Golden Bears did all of their scoring in the fifth, plating four runs on three hits, two walks and one ESU error.

Sophomore Rachael Liguori (4-3, 1.33 ERA) threw her sixth complete game in seven starts for the Warriors.

Holden was 3-for-3 in the No. 5 spot in the order as ESU had six hits in the game. The Warriors left six runners on base, including two each in the second and fourth innings.
