Warriors Softball Splits at Mansfield, Plays for PSAC Tournament Spot Saturday vs. Bloomsburg

MANSFIELD - Freshman third baseman Mary Wallick hit a key three-run homer and East Stroudsburg University added eight runs in the seventh inning, posting a 13-1 win in the second game of a doubleheader split at Mansfield in PSAC East softball on Friday.
 
ESU (19-18, 12-14) rallied after dropping the opener, 9-1 (5 inn.).

The Warriors can secure a PSAC Tournament berth with a win in Saturday's doubleheader vs. Bloomsburg (23-11, 18-6), or with a tiebreaker scenario depending on other results around the conference.

ESU enters Saturday two games ahead of Shippensburg, Millersville and Lock Haven, all at 10-16, for the fourth and final playoff spot in the PSAC East. The Warriors are looking for their first PSAC Tournament appearance since 2010.

Senior 1B Cara McNeil was 5-for-7 with two doubles and three RBI in the doubleheader, including 4-for-5 in the nightcap.

The Warriors had 14 hits to support a complete game effort by sophomore Rachael Liguori (7.0 IP, 0 ER), who struck out nine and scattered five hits to improve to 9-8 on the season.

Shippensburg is at Mansfield (11-21-1, 6-18) and Millersville is at Lock Haven in other key series on Saturday.

GAME 1 - L 9-1 (5 inn.)

Mansfield scored two runs in the second inning and four in the third to take control, and Ashley Inman (8-9) held ESU to one run on three hits while striking out six.

ESU scored its run in the fourth inning when Wallick singled, moved to third on a pair of wild pitches and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior OF Kasey Meckes.

Courtney Bauder was 3-for-3, including a grand slam in the third inning, in the leadoff spot for Mansfield.

GAME 2 - W 13-1

Liguori matched a career-high with nine strikeouts, which she set against Mansfield last year as a freshman, and threw her 13th complete game in 17 starts this season.

The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the first when Meckes hit a one-out single and scored on an RBI double by McNeil.

Mansfield tied it at 1-1 with an unearned run in the bottom of the second, but the Warriors took the lead for good in the top of the fourth.

Senior 2B Jamie Smith led off the fourth with a double, junior SS Haley Thomas singled and freshman catcher Janine Giordano had an RBI double to break the tie. Two batters later, Wallick homered to right field to put the Warriors ahead, 5-1.

It remained a four-run game until the seventh, when ESU sent 13 batters to the plate, scoring eight runs on seven hits and three walks.

The first four batters had hits with a double by junior OF Sierra Wagner, an RBI double by McNeil, a single by Smith and an RBI single by Thomas. Freshman OF Katherine Liedberg added an RBI double, Wagner had a two-run double for her second hit of the inning and McNeil collected another RBI with a single.

Wagner (2-for-3, 2 RBI, run), Smith (2-for-4, 2 runs) and Thomas (2-for-4, RBI, run) all joined McNeil with multi-hit games.
