William Berry earned second team All-America honors in the high jump, finishing 10th and tying his own school record at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at Grand Valley State.
Berry cleared 6-10 3/4, matching the school record of Toby Virgil (1982) which Berry also cleared at ESU's All-American Meet on April 18, to earn his first career All-America honor in his third trip to the NCAA DII Championships.
Berry was tied for 17th on the NCAA entry list coming into the championships.
This marks the first year that the NCAA has awarded second team All-America status to the ninth through 12th-place finishes in each event.
Senior Christina O'Connor placed sixth, tying her outdoor career best at 5-8, to finish her career with four All-America honors on Saturday.
Berry topped 6-10 3/4 on his second attempt and was clean on his first two heights (6-6 3/4 and 6-8 3/4). He missed on all three attempts at 6-11 3/4, which would have been an ESU outdoor record and matched the indoor school record he shares with
Seth Bailey (both set in 2014).
Berry made his third career NCAA Championships appearance. He was tied for ninth indoors (6-8 3/4) and no-heighted outdoors as a sophomore in 2014.
He won his second career PSAC championship (6-9 3/4) on May 2 at Eiler-Martin Stadium. He also won the 2014 outdoor title.
Berry is the 24th ESU All-America in men's track and field and the third in the high jump, joining Bailey (2014 indoors) and Mike Newhard (2002 and 2003 indoors).
O'Connor finished her career on Friday as a four-time All-America, five-time national qualifier and five-time PSAC champion in the high jump. She was the USTFCCCA Atlantic Region Indoor Field Athlete of the Year and PSAC Indoor Field Athlete of the Year this season, tying the PSAC record (5-10).
Both are coached by Karen (Way) Gaita '91, a four-time All-America and the 1991 NCAA DII outdoor champion. Gaita has earned the last two USTFCCCA Indoor Women's Assistant Coach of the Year awards (2014, 2015).
