EAST STROUDSBURG – Junior midfielder
Sydney McCarthy and sophomore forward
Bailey Quinn each scored goals, and senior goalkeeper
Danielle Ard earned her 20th career shutout as No. 2 East Stroudsburg University took down IUP 2-0 at Whitenight Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Quinn has now scored five goals in the past three contests, while McCarthy (2 G, 1 A) also has points in three straight games. Ard finished with two saves in goal to pick up her eighth clean sheet of the 2016 season (sixth solo). Her 20 career shutouts ranks third in program history.
The Warriors (13-3, 7-1 PSAC) registered their sixth-consecutive victory while outshooting the Crimson Hawks (7-6, 3-4 PSAC) by a 22-4 margin.
ESU generated scoring chances in three of its first four penalty corners of the game, and McCarthy's goal came on the last of those opportunities. Senior midfielder
Desiraye Mack directed the corner towards senior back
Emily Howell, and Howell set up McCarthy for a low liner which beat goalkeeper Alyssa Lerda in the 24th minute.
Howell recorded her fourth assist of the season, while Mack's helper was her first of 2016.
The Warriors had a 9-1 edge in shots heading into the intermission, and they kept up the pressure in the second half.
Their possession eventually turned into a second goal with just under 20 minutes left, as Quinn deflected a shot off an IUP defender and into the cage from the right side of the circle for her eighth tally of the season. She is now only one back of senior forward
Robin Stevenson for the team lead.
Stevenson had a team-high five shots in today's victory. Matti Reightler had three of IUP's four attempts, including an effort right in front of the cage with 1:53 remaining which was turned away by Ard to preserve the clean sheet.
ESU earned its fourth-straight win over IUP. Earlier in the afternoon, they remained at No. 2 in the latest Division II rankings released by the NFHCA (full poll below) after going 2-0 against PSAC opponents last week.
The Warriors, who clinched a spot in this year's PSAC tournament with today's win, have two games remaining in the regular season, beginning with their home finale against No. 1 Shippensburg at 1 p.m. on Saturday. ESU handed the Raiders (14-1, 7-0 PSAC) their only loss when the teams met on Sept. 17 earlier in the fall, with Howell netting a game-winner 2:46 into overtime.
