EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior
Sarah Fillman and junior
Desiree Claxton had seven kills each, and 15 different players saw action as East Stroudsburg University completed a 3-0 sweep over Cheyney on Friday night at Koehler Fieldhouse. Set scores were 25-14, 25-16, 29-27.
With the win, the Warriors (11-13, 3-7 PSAC) remain a game back of West Chester for first place in the PSAC Southeast Division heading into a 1 p.m. home tilt against the Golden Rams on Saturday afternoon. Cheyney (3-16, 0-10 PSAC) was led by a seven-kill, eight-dig effort from Virshawna Campbell.
All of Claxton's kills, which came with a .600 attack percentage, came in the opening set, as ESU hit .462 as a team to take control of the match early. The Warriors then experimented with several different lineup options over the remaining two sets.
The Wolves jumped out to a 14-11 lead in the second set, forcing a timeout out of ESU head coach
Allison Keeley. A Cheyney service error after the break switched the serve over to Warrior freshman
Abby Moore, and the home side would ultimately rattle off a 9-0 run to open up a six-point advantage. Moore and junior
Rosa Veliky each finished with three aces apiece, and ESU had a 10-6 edge in aces for the match.
An ace from junior
Lydia Redman gave the Warriors a 22-16 lead in the third set, and ESU had four match points at 24-20 after a Cheyney attack error. The Wolves, though, saved all four of those match points, and a Warrior error gave them a set point of their own at 27-26.
An extended rally on that set point was capped by a kill from freshman
Jasmine Williams. ESU then finished off the match on a block by senior
Hanna Bergen and sophomore
Kimberly McCann followed by a Cheyney attack error.
Williams totaled six kills with a .385 attack percentage, while Bergen chipped in four kills and a team-high four block assists. Junior
Maddie Reichard also had a strong performance for the Warriors, supplying five kills with a .833 attack percentage.
ESU hit .244 for the match compared to .012 for the Wolves.
The Warriors can now look ahead to tomorrow's contest against West Chester. The Golden Rams (16-7, 4-6 PSAC) earned a 3-0 win at Kutztown earlier on Friday to maintain their one-game division lead over ESU.
