WEST CHESTER - Senior midfielder
Shea Neal scored both goals, including the game-winner in the 64th minute, lifting East Stroudsburg University to its third straight PSAC women's soccer championship with a come-from-behind, 2-1 win over Kutztown on Sunday afternoon at West Chester.
Neal was named PSAC Tournament MVP for the third straight year for the Warriors (15-4-1), who become the second PSAC school to win three straight PSAC women's soccer titles, joining Lock Haven (1999-01).
The championship is the PSAC-best fifth in ESU women's soccer program history, breaking a tie with West Chester (4). The Warriors won the inaugural PSAC championship in 1994, followed by the 1997 title and the last three (2014-16) under 10th-year head coach
Rob Berkowitz.
After Kutztown (17-4) took a 1-0 lead just 1:41 into the game, Neal scored the game-tying goal in the 30th minute, assisted by senior back
Liia Carpenter, and the game-winner 18:02 into the second half, assisted by freshman midfielder
Danielle Cary.
Junior goalkeeper
Jules Harris - the PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Year - made six saves for the Warriors, two days after making three saves on penalty kicks as they advanced, 3-2 on penalties, after a 1-1 (2OT) tie vs. top-seeded and unbeaten West Chester.
Neal was named PSAC Tournament MVP for the third straight year, scoring the game-winning goal in victories over Kutztown (1-0) in 2014 and Edinboro (2-1 OT) in 2015. She was named to the All-PSAC first team for the third time in her career (2013-14, 16) and was named all-conference for the fourth straight year on Thursday.
The Warriors have won their three straight PSAC championships as the No. 1 seed in 2014 - winning three straight home games; the No. 7 seed in 2015 - advancing on PK's at West Chester, followed by two neutral site wins; and the No. 4 seed in 2016 - posting a 5-0 win vs. Slippery Rock in the quarterfinals, then advancing on PK's at West Chester and beating Kutztown in the final.
ESU improves to 7-0-2 in PSAC Tournament games over the last three seasons.
The Warriors gain the PSAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament and will make their fifth NCAA appearance in program history.
ESU is the defending Atlantic Region champion, winning last year's title as the No. 6 (lowest) seed after winning the PSAC title as the No. 7 seed.
Felicia Silveira opened the scoring for Kutztown at the 1:41 mark, assisted by Alaina Curry, to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead in their fourth PSAC championship game appearance in the last eight years. Goalkeeper Jenna Bracken had four saves.
Kutztown is now a six-time PSAC runner-up (2004-05, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2016).
Both teams recorded 10 shots, with ESU making a big push in the second half (7-4). The Warriors held an 8-7 edge in corner kicks.
Neal's opening goal was scored after a shot by Carpenter was saved by Bracken, with the rebound falling to the feet of the senior midfielder, who drilled it past Bracken for a 1-1 tie.
The game-winner, in the 64th minute, came off a cross from Cary from the left wing which was touched in off Neal, beating Bracken to put the Warriors ahead 2-1.
Neal doubled her season goal total to four and has 26 in her career, fifth in school history. She was the initial first team All-America selection in program history as a sophomore on the 2014 team that went 20-1-1, including 20 straight wins.
