EAST STROUDSBURG – Freshman
Jasmine Williams had a career-high 11 kills and a .579 attack percentage, while junior
Desiree Claxton turned in another strong performance with 18 kills and 20 digs as East Stroudsburg University topped Kutztown 3-1 to pick up a second-straight PSAC win on Tuesday evening.
Set scores were 23-25, 25-13, 25-19, 25-16 as the Warriors (13-17, 5-11 PSAC) closed out the home portion of its schedule with a victory. ESU also completed its first season sweep of the Golden Bears (5-22, 2-14 PSAC) since 2004. Brittney Moyer led Kutztown with 19 kills and 11 digs.
Freshman
Abby Moore added three aces and 14 digs for the Warriors, and junior
Rosa Veliky (16) reached double digits in digs for a fourth-consecutive match.
Neither side led by more than three points in a competitive opening set. With the score tied at 23-23, the Golden Bears claimed the final two points to grab a 1-0 lead.
ESU fell behind 5-2 in the second set as well, but a kill from freshman
Sam Dunphy began a 12-4 stretch for the Warriors which gave them a 14-9 edge. Dunphy had a strong night overall, finishing with eight kills and a .412 attack percentage.
Kutztown had pulled back within three at 16-13 when a kill from Claxton put the Stafford, Va., native on the service line. She remained there for the rest of the set, as ESU finished the frame on a 9-0 run to even up the match at 1-1.
Claxton has 75 kills and 71 digs over the past four matches, registering at least 15 kills in every contest and picking up 20+ digs on three occasions. She has also chipped in four aces and nine blocks during that span.
Three points also separated the teams late in the third set, with ESU holding an 18-15 advantage in the later stages. Two aces from Moore highlighted a 4-0 stretch which strengthened the Warrior lead, and Williams capped the set with a kill shortly afterwards.
ESU never trailed in the fourth set, using an 8-1 run to grab a 14-6 edge early on. The Warriors finished off the match on three-straight kills (two from Claxton, one from Dunphy).
Senior
Hanna Bergen earned a start on the final home match of her collegiate career, and she recorded kills on three of her five attack attempts while also assisting on a block.
Sophomore
Tina Predojevic and junior
Erica Cunningham each had strong setting performances, registering 28 and 20 assists, respectively.
ESU is two games back of West Chester in the PSAC Southeast division standings with two matches remaining in the regular season. The Warriors will have an opportunity to close the gap on Friday, as they hit the road to play the Golden Rams (20-10, 7-9 PSAC) at 7 p.m. that evening. ESU concludes the regular season on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Cheyney (3-22, 0-16 PSAC).
