EAST STROUDSBURG - Junior Rachael Liguori and senior Amanda Carlin combined for a 4-2 win in the opener, while Bowie State won 3-1 (5 inn.) in a lightning-shortened game in the nightcap as East Stroudsburg University split a non-conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday at Zimbar Field.

Liguori (4.1 IP, 2 runs) and Carlin (2.2 IP, 0 runs) helped pitched the Warriors (6-2) to a win in their home opener. Liguori improved to 3-1 on the season and Carlin earned her second career save.

Junior Rae Holden was 3-for-3 with a double, sophomore 2B Heather Visco was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs and sophomore OF Madison Oren was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI.

In the second game, Bowie State scored three runs in the first inning and Stefanie Ray limited ESU to one run on four hits to earn the split.

Oren was 3-for-3 with two doubles and a walk to reach base safely in all four plate appearances on Tuesday. Holden was 4-for-5 with a double and Visco was 3-for-5 with a double, combining for 10 of the Warriors' 14 hits.

ESU travels to USciences on Friday and Lock Haven on Saturday for a pair of non-conference doubleheaders.

GAME 1 - W 4-2

ESU scored two runs in the second inning, one in the fourth and one in the sixth, with Carlin relieving Liguori in the circle after Bowie State cut the Warriors' lead to 3-2 in the top of the fifth.

Senior catcher Haley Thomas, the reigning PSAC East Athlete of the Week, singled and scored on an RBI single by sophomore OF Katherine Liedberg, who in turn scored on an RBI double by Oren, to get the Warriors on the board in the second inning.

Visco doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Liedberg and scored on an RBI single by Oren in the fourth.

In the sixth, Visco singled and stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Janine Giordano and scored on an RBI single by freshman 3B Samantha Pickar.

Liguori scattered six hits, struck out two and walked three in 4.1 innings before Carlin entered with the tying run on second base but got out of the top of the fifth inning with no further damage. She pitched around a two-out double in the sixth and two singles in the seventh after ESU had added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.

Pitcher Nicoleen Ochoa and shortstop Jacqueline Pickering both homered for the Bulldogs.

GAME 2 - L 3-1

Bowie State scored three runs on five hits in the first inning to take an early lead, and the Warriors fell despite 4.1 innings of scoreless relief by senior Allison Mende.

ESU had a couple of chances on a leadoff triple by sophomore SS Mary Wallick in the first inning and a leadoff double by Oren in the third before scoring its run in the fourth. Holden singled, advanced all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior 1B Danielle Dungee and scored on a sacrifice fly by Thomas.

Bowie State pushed its lead to 7-1 in the top of the sixth before the game was delayed and later called due to lightning in the bottom of the sixth. The final score reverted to the last half inning with Bowie State leading, 3-1.

Mende yielded just four hits, struck out four and didn't issue a walk in her relief appearance.
