SHIPPENSBURG - Senior catcher
Haley Thomas, junior
Rae Holden and sophomore outfielder
Madison Oren hit home runs, but East Stroudsburg University dropped a PSAC East softball doubleheader at Shippensburg (4-3, 13-4 [5 inn.]) to finish the 2016 season on Saturday afternoon.
Thomas and Holden hit back-to-back homers, both their sixth of the season, in the opener but the Warriors' seventh-inning rally fell short as they attempted to climb back from a two-run deficit.
Shippensburg (17-25, 5-11) jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap.
Thomas finishes the season with a .371 batting average (43-for-116) for ESU (19-21, 2-14), the Warriors' highest since Brittany Racek (.386) and Alicea Ashe (.377) in 2011.
Junior
Rachael Liguori threw her 12th complete game of the season for ESU in game one. Ship scored three runs on a Taylor Pattillo home run in the first inning and one run in the second, but couldn't dent the scoreboard in its final four at-bats.
ESU left two runners on base in the third inning and left the bases loaded in the fifth, before breaking through again in the seventh. Freshman 3B
Samantha Pickar hit a leadoff double and sophomore SS
Mary Wallick singled before sophomore 2B
Heather Visco plated Pickar with a sacrifice fly, but the Warriors couldn't push the tying run across.
In the nightcap, ESU got a two-run homer from Oren in the second inning, an RBI single by Oren in the third and scored on a wild pitch in the fifth.
Wallick was 3-for-4 in the opener and 4-for-7 overall in the doubleheader. Pickar was 2-for-3 in game one and Oren was 2-for-2 with three RBI in game two.
Thomas leads four ESU players who hit over .300 this year, along with Pickar (.326), Visco (.325) and senior OF
Sierra Wagner (.302).
Visco (28) and Thomas (27) led ESU in RBI, Visco scored a team-high 25 runs, and Thomas, Visco and Holden each hit six home runs.
In the circle, Liguori was 9-13 in 25 games (22 starts) and led the Warriors with 12 complete games, 1 shutout, 121.2 innings and 88 strikeouts. Senior
Allison Mende led the Warriors in ERA (3.65), going 6-5 in 19 games (6 starts) and 71.0 innings, and senior
Amanda Carlin had a 4.57 ERA in 24 games (12 starts) and 67.1 innings.
