EAST STROUDSBURG - Senior back
Hannah Gombos scored the game's only goal in the 53rd minute and junior goalkeeper
Jules Harris made four saves, leading No. 9-ranked East Stroudsburg University to a 1-0 win at Lock Haven in the 2016 PSAC women's soccer opener on Thursday.
ESU (1-0), the two-time defending PSAC champion and defending NCAA Division II Atlantic Region champion, opened defense of its titles in its 10th season under head coach
Rob Berkowitz.
Harris recorded her 18th career shutout (16th solo) in 39 starts for the Warriors after earning NSCAA All-Region second team honors last fall.
Harris' 16 career solo shutouts are ESU's most since they are available (starting in 2003). Brittain Wagner, a three-year starter, had 15 solo shutouts from 2010-13.
Harris also moved into second at ESU in career total shutouts. Stacy Linzenbold holds the school record with 27 (1995-98), followed by Harris, Wagner with 17 and Janine Turcio with 14 (2007-08).
Gombos' goal was the seventh of her career. She had two goals and two assists on last year's regional championship team.
The Warriors started two freshmen in midfielders
Danielle Cary and
Syd Hicks, replacing departed seniors
Syrandin Deere Vester and
Sammi Jo Hughes. ESU returned nine starters, with eight starting Thursday's game.
Bree Hilty had three saves for Lock Haven, which held an 8-6 advantage in shots.
ESU hosts Shippensburg in its home opener on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
