GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Jeanine Nunez converted a penalty kick with 14:43 remaining, giving No. 5-ranked Adelphi a 2-1 win over No. 4 East Stroudsburg University in non-conference women's soccer on Monday night.
ESU (7-1), playing in the first match-up of top-10 and top-5 teams in the NSCAA Division II poll in school history, suffers its first loss of the season.
The Warriors struck first as senior back
Liia Carpenter scored on a cross from the wing, sneaking the ball under the crossbar with 7:40 left in the first half.
Adelphi (6-1) scored 3:31 later on the ninth goal of the season by Morgan Santoro, ranked in the top 10 in DII in scoring, to tie the game at 1-1 with 3:49 remaining until halftime.
Nunez's penalty kick gave Adelphi the lead - and ESU's first deficit of the season - in the 76th minute.
ESU had all three of its corner kicks in the final 15 minutes, earned several free kicks inside midfield and had a shot by senior midfielder
Shea Neal go just wide in the last 90 seconds, but the Warriors were unable to find the tying goal.
Santoro's goal ended ESU's consecutive shutout minutes streak at 543:34, the school's longest since at least 2003, and was the first goal the Warriors conceded since the first half of a 2-1 win vs. Shippensburg on September 3.
ESU junior goalkeeper
Jules Harris made eight saves, her most since making eight in a 2-0 win vs. Edinboro in the NCAA DII Atlantic Regional final last fall.
Adelphi held a 24-6 advantage in shots, 14-4 in the first half and 10-2 in the second half. The Panthers were ranked third in DII in goals per game (4.0) entering the night and were coming off their first loss of the season, a 4-3 setback vs. No. 18 Stonehill on Saturday night.
ESU entered ranked third in DII in goals against average (.143), allowing just one goal in its first seven games, and had posted five straight shutouts - tied for the longest streak in school history.
The Warriors return to PSAC action this weekend at Eiler-Martin Stadium, hosting California on Friday at 1 p.m. and IUP on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. ESU, the two-time defending PSAC champion, has opened the season with a 7-0 conference record.
