KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Sophomore
Aspen Gaita obliterated the school record in the 55-meter hurdles, and she also posted an NCAA Division II provisional distance in the high jump to lead East Stroudsburg University at the two-day Kutztown Invitational which concluded on Friday night.
Warrior competitors entered the program record books in a total of five events on the evening while registering 21 PSAC-qualifying marks.
The previous ESU record in the 55m hurdles was a time of 8.38 recorded by Sheara Williamson in 1998. Gaita broke that mark with the top preliminary time of 8.21, and she then crossed the line in 8.08 to easily top the field in the finals later in the evening. The Stroudsburg native previously set an NCAA provisional and school record time of 8.59 in the 60m hurdles at Lehigh's Fast Times Meet on Dec. 9.
Her 8.08 breaks a Kutztown facility record previously set by Shippensburg's Danielle Sciremammano (8.28) last winter.
In the high jump, Gaita took first place with a top distance of 5' 5 3/4", just ahead of the NCAA provisional mark of 5' 5". That jump is the 10th-best in school history.
ESU had similar hurdling success on the men's side, with senior
Steve Morgan winning in the finals after crossing the line in 7.62, only three-hundredths off his PR of 7.59 which is No. 2 in program history. Junior
Christian Castro, meanwhile, entered the record book at No. 4 all-time after placing third in the finals with a time of 7.69.
Senior
Sean Hagerty came just short of an NCAA provision distance in the long jump, registering the eighth-longest effort in school history at 23' 1/2" to take second out of 11 competitors. Freshmen
Sam Avalos (third – 21' 9 1/2") and
Darnell Randall (fourth – 21' 9") also posted PSAC marks in the event.
Freshman
Jasmine Uzzell was the final Warrior to get her name in the record book, as her top toss of 39' 1 1/4" is No. 10 all-time in team history. Uzzell and fellow freshman
Me'Saj Closs (37' 8 1/2") both had PSAC-qualifying throws.
Senior
Brandie Tartza (pole vault, 10' 10"), junior
Kaylyn West (3000m, 10:45.49), sophomore
Khai Samuels (1000m, 2:34.65) and junior Zach Krieger (mile, 4:39.19) all won their respective events on Friday. Tartza and West qualified for PSACs, with Tartza's effort only three quarters of an inch off her PR which is No. 4 in program history.
Four ESU men posted PSAC times in the 55m dash, with sophomore
Pat Monahan (6.55) followed by sophomore
Quincy Palmer (6.66), junior
Montel Johnson-Troupe (6.68) and junior
Ernest Pendleton (6.73).
Ronald D'Eliseo and Monahan recorded identical PSAC marks of 23.25 in the 200m, with D'Eliseo edging out Monahan in a photo finish to take second place out of 20 overall runners.
Men's PSAC qualifiers in the field included junior
Jonathan Hummel (weight throw, 46' 10"), freshman
Vance Stay, Jr. (high jump, 6' 2 3/4"), Randall (high jump, 6' 3/4") and freshman
Noah Lockwood (shot put, 45' 7 3/4"). Lockwood's toss placed him second out of 12 throwers.
Other women's PSAC qualifiers included senior
Erin Brady (800m, 2:24.21) and Closs, who added a second PSAC distance in the high jump (5' 1"). Senior
Lauren Toth, meanwhile, took second in the 1000m with a time of 3:08.91 which was less than two seconds away from a top 10 all-time spot.
ESU's women's 4x400m relay foursome of Gaita, sophomore
Leiana Dean, senior
Kelley Anne Stuetz and Brady (4:08.41) edged out West Chester by a tenth of a second for first place.
The Warriors are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 21, traveling to Bucknell to compete in the Gulden Invitational.
