EAST STROUDSBURG – Junior guard
Imani Brown had 11 points, 11 rebounds and five steals, while senior guard
Madison Tamburini chipped in nine points and six rebounds as East Stroudsburg University never trailed in a 65-39 victory over Mansfield at Koehler Fieldhouse on Wednesday night.
Brown matched a career-high in rebounds while registering her third-career double-double (second this season). The Warriors (11-7, 7-7 PSAC) held the Mountaineers (4-14, 2-12 PSAC) to 20.4 percent shooting from the floor (10-49), the lowest shooting percentage by an opponent since Salem International shot 18.3 percent on Dec. 5, 2009. The 39 points were the fewest allowed by ESU dating back to a 61-35 win over Millersville on Jan. 31, 2015.
The Warrior defense was up to the task straight from the opening whistle, as Mansfield was held without a field goal until the final five seconds of the first quarter. A 3-pointer from freshman guard
Tiffany Lapotsky capped a 14-3 run by the home side to begin the game, and the score was 14-5 heading into the second.
The lead was up to 24-12 with 4:50 left in the opening half, and a layup by freshman center
Alison Bauman with 1:02 on the clock gave ESU a 31-17 edge at the intermission.
Tamburini netted four points in a 9-2 run by the Warriors to begin the second half, and the Mounties would not get closer than 18 points the rest of the way.
All 12 ESU players to appear in the contest scored, and all five starters managed at least two assists. Freshman guard
Jordan Hertz, sophomore guard
Noelle Powell and Lapotsky each totaled seven points, with Hertz adding two steals and a pair of blocks.
The Warriors had commanding advantages in rebounding (47-37) and points in the paint (20-6). They also generated 22 points off 16 Mansfield turnovers. Brielle Kelly led the way with 13 points (9-14 FT) and 11 rebounds.
Brown's five steals marked a new season-high; she was two shy of her career-best total of seven set against Bloomsburg on Jan. 30 last season.
ESU pulled within a game of West Chester (8-10, 8-6 PSAC) after the Golden Rams fell 72-70 at Kutztown earlier in the evening.
The Warriors are back on the road on Saturday, looking to extend their winning streak with a 2 p.m. contest at Lock Haven. ESU topped the Bald Eagles (7-11, 4-10 PSAC) by a 76-59 margin when the two teams met at Koehler Fieldhouse on Jan. 3.
