Richardson Wins 50th Career Bout, Warriors Drop Three Matchups at LIU Post

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Senior Tyler Richardson earned his 50th career collegiate victory, and redshirt sophomore Dylan Nace and graduate student John Pellegrino combined to go 5-0 on the day, but East Stroudsburg University fell in each of its three contested matches at LIU Post on Sunday.

The Warriors (2-6) fell 30-16 to the host Pioneers in the morning before suffering defeats to Division I Hofstra (34-15) and Merchant Marine (26-21) in the afternoon.

Today's matchups were the first for ESU since the PSAC championships on Dec. 10. The Warriors will return to Koehler Fieldhouse for the first time since Nov. 30 on Friday night, hosting Shippensburg in a PSAC contest scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

Match 1: ESU vs. LIU Post

Pellegrino, appearing for the first time this season after missing the beginning of the season due to injury, got the Warriors off to a winning start at 125 pounds with a 11-3 major decision triumph over Jacoby Jones.

After the Pioneers (6-2) evened things up with a major decision victory by Anthony Sparacio at 133, Nace came out on top in a battle of regionally ranked wrestlers at 141. Nace, ranked No. 3 in the region (No. 10 nationally), topped No. 7 Vinny Turano by a 5-2 final.

Senior Joey Kratochvil and Richardson added the remaining two wins for ESU. Kratochvil edged out Jackson Mordente by a 5-3 final at 157, and Richardson pinned Dan McClure in 3:33 at 184 for his milestone 50th lifetime victory.

LIU Post earned 18 of its 30 points through pins at 149 and 285 pounds and a forfeit win at 174 pounds. Logan McGinn clinched the match with a 10-2 major decision victory at 197.

The Warriors' four regionally-ranked wrestlers combined to go 4-0 in the opening match of the day.

Match 2: ESU vs. Hofstra

Pellegrino, Nace and Richardson improved to 2-0 on the afternoon with victories over DI opponents at 125, `141 and 184 pounds. Pellegrino edged out Jacob Martin by an 8-7 final, Nace pinned Connor Burkert in 1:45 for his fourth fall of the season (15th of his career) and Richardson pinned Michael Oxley in 4:59 for his 14th victory in 2016-17.

The Pride (3-3) won five of the eight contested bouts, earning bonus points in four of those five victories.

Match 3: ESU vs. Merchant Marine

The Warriors grabbed points in four of the first five contested weight classes, earning 12 points via forfeit and an additional nine through a 2-0 win by Nace over Chad Puglio at 149 and a pin in 1:11 by Kratochvil over Erik Beshada at 157.

The Mariners, though, won each of the final five contested bouts to rally from a 21-5 deficit, sealing the victory with a technical fall at 285.

Nace moved up to 149 pounds for the second time this season (he previously won a 10-2 major decision over West Liberty's Josh Cornell on Dec. 4). He improved his season record to 16-2 (8-0 in duals), with bonus point wins in nine of those 16 triumphs. Nace remains unbeaten in duals for his collegiate career, winning all 21 contested bouts.

Richardson is now 14-7 (7-1 duals) on the year, with falls in 9 of 14 victories, after going 2-1 on Sunday. He upped his lifetime record to 51-37 (29-15 duals).
