ESU Women’s Basketball Falls 68-58 at Home to West Chester

EAST STROUDSBURG – Porscha Spiller had 16 points and five steals, and three other players scored in double figures as West Chester held off a fourth-quarter comeback attempt to top East Stroudsburg University by a 68-58 final on Monday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.

The Warriors (8-5, 4-5 PSAC) cut a 19-point second-half deficit down to four at 62-58 with 1:32 remaining in regulation, but the Golden Rams (5-8, 5-4 PSAC) went 6 for 8 from the line in the closing seconds to seal the win.

Senior forward Allison Howard registered a game-high 22 points, including 11 in the third quarter to help spur ESU's rally. She hit 9 of 14 shots from the field and 4 of 5 free throw attempts, reaching 20 points for the third time this season and 12th overall in her collegiate career.

Sophomore guard Noelle Powell added 16 points on 6 of 14 shooting, reaching double figures for a third-straight game and an 11th time in 13 contests this season, and senior guard Rachel Falkowski chipped in nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

The Warriors shot 33.9 percent from the field and committed a season-high 23 turnovers. Tori Smick (11 points), Madison Torresin (10) and Jenna Widdicombe (10) joined Spiller in double figures for West Chester.

The visitors held ESU off the scoreboard for the first 4:57 of the contest while jumping out to an early 6-0 advantage. Powell sank one of her two 3-pointers to pull the Warriors within 14-11 with 1:58 on the clock, but the Golden Rams ended the frame on another 6-0 run to open up a nine-point edge.

West Chester continued to increase the margin in the second quarter, with a long ball by Camden Boehner with 10 seconds left making it 37-20 heading into halftime.

Torresin opened the second half with a pair of free throws to up the margin to 19, and the lead remained in double digits throughout the third, with the visitors ultimately taking a 53-40 advantage into the final 10 minutes.

With the score 60-47, West Chester, with 5:34 left in regulation, Howard drilled a jumper to begin a 6-0 run for the home side. Sophomore guard Ann McKnight, Falkowski and Howard then scored in a 5-0 spurt shortly afterwards to get ESU within four. The Warriors, though, went 0 for 3 with three turnovers in the final minute and a half of the game.

ESU registered 14 steals in the game to help force 25 Golden Ram turnovers. Junior guard Imani Brown, senior guard Madison Tamburini, freshman guard Sadie Cresswell, Powell and Falkowski each had two thefts as the Warriors reached double digit steals for a fourth time this season.

Junior center Rebecca Rutkowski also supplied three blocks for a second-straight game. She has multiple blocks in 8 of 13 games this season, and now has 95 in her ESU career, one shy of Jackie Yandrisevits (2005-09) for sixth in program history.

West Chester topped the Warriors for an 11th-straight game, and ESU is now a game behind West Chester and Shippensburg for first place in the PSAC East standings.

The Warriors remain at Koehler Fieldhouse on Wednesday for the second of three-consecutive home games, hosting Kutztown (5-12, 2-7 PSAC) in a contest scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
