EAST STROUDSBURG - Junior midfielder
Kelli Shapiro scored both goals in the second half and senior goalkeeper
Halle Frisco made five saves, leading No. 2-ranked East Stroudsburg University to a 2-0 win vs. No. 7 West Chester in PSAC field hockey on Tuesday afternoon at Whitenight Field.
Shapiro scored just under 10 minutes into the second half and against just over nine minutes later for the Warriors (12-3, 5-2), who remained No. 2 in this week's NFHCA Division II coaches poll earlier Tuesday.
Shapiro's first goal was unassisted on a scramble in front of the cage, and the second was deflected in on a shot on a penalty corner by senior back
Sydney McCarthy, who registered her ninth assist of the season.
Frisco notched her fifth solo shutout and eighth overall shutout of the year. Her five saves are tied for her second-most in a shutout this fall.
ESU held a 12-10 advantage in shots in the contest, outshooting West Chester (9-6, 3-4) 8-3 in the second half after WCU had a 7-4 edge in the first half. The Golden Rams led in penalty corners, 8-3.
Shapiro's two goals give her four of the season and seven in her career after recording her first multi-goal game.
McCarthy pushed her season totals to eight goals and nine assists, leading the Warriors with 25 points from her position at center back.
ESU extended its goal differential to 49-15 through the first 15 games.
The Warriors improve to 5-1 in their last six games against West Chester, which won two PSAC championships in its first four seasons in DII (2012, 2014) but is in danger of missing the conference tournament for the first time since reclassifying from DI in 2011.
ESU improves to 46-11 (23-4 PSAC) since the start of the 2015 PSAC championship season, and has been ranked in the top three of the NFHCA DII poll in 47 of those 57 games, including 22 straight.
The Warriors are away for their next two games, Saturday at Slippery Rock and next Wednesday at Kutztown, before hosting Mansfield in the regular season finale on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. at Whitenight Field.
