CALIFORNIA, Pa. – Senior
Kaylyn West finished in the top 15 for a second-consecutive season, and four men's runners landed in the top 30 to highlight a standout showing for East Stroudsburg University's cross country teams at Saturday's PSAC Championship meet.
The Warriors ended up with a combined seven All-PSAC runners across both races. West crossed the line in 15th place in the women's 6k race to earn repeat first team accolades. Senior
Samantha Young (17th) and sophomore
Rachael Davalos (28th) added second team All-PSAC performances for the women, who finished sixth in the team standings.
The ESU men, who lost each of its top six scorers from last year's NCAA Atlantic Regional meet, took fifth place out of 16 schools to earn the program's best result at PSAC's since the 2012 team finished as the conference runner-up.
Freshman
Casey Ellis (23rd), senior
Dan Buccino (25th), sophomore
Jeremy Smith (26th) and sophomore
Mike Sheptuk (27th) all took home second team All-PSAC honors after completing the 8k course within 12 seconds of each other. The Warriors had four All-PSAC runners for the second time in program history; ESU had four student-athletes place in the top 15 in both 2012 and 1985.
Ellis crossed the line in 28:05.80. ESU's top scorer in 4 of 5 meets this fall, his 23rd place showing is tied for the fourth best by a Warrior freshman all-time at PSAC's. Ellis was closely followed by Buccino (28:09.00), Smith (28:09.30) and Sheptuk (28:17.40).
Junior
Tom Ciaccio rounded out the scorers for the Warriors, as he took 60th place (55th in the team rankings) with a time of 29:12.30. Ciaccio placed in ESU's top five for the first time this season and the second time overall in his collegiate career.
West becomes the 15th Warrior woman to earn multiple first team All-PSAC honors. She finished 12th as a junior last year, and her time of 23:43.80 was good enough for 15th place this fall.
Young (23:45.80) was only two seconds back in 17th. She moved up two spots from her 19th place, second team All-PSAC showing as a junior. Davalos, meanwhile, lands on the all-conference team in her first year with the program after registering a time of 24:21.20.
Sophomores
Rachel Eidson (52nd, 25:18.90) and
Emily Eder (60th, 25:32.40) rounded out ESU's top five. Eidson is the Warriors' No. 4 scorer for a second-straight year at PSAC's, while Eder cracks the scoring places for the first time this season.
This is the third straight year that the ESU women have had at least three runners earn All-PSAC status. The seven combined all-conference performances between the men's and women's programs are tied for the most all-time with the 2012 squads.
Edinboro (87 points) edged out Shippensburg (89) for first place in the women's team standings, while California's Julie Friend (22:07.80) claimed the individual title on her home course. ESU's 172 points were 12 back of Cal in fifth place and 20 ahead of seventh-place Slippery Rock.
The positions were flipped on the men's side, as Shippensburg (38 points) beat out Edinboro (57) for first place. The Warriors (156) edged sixth-place Bloomsburg by six points, while they were 11 back of Lock Haven in fourth. Edinboro's Austin Pondel (26:27.90) finished in first place overall.
Select ESU runners will travel to Lock Haven next Saturday to take part in the Lock Haven Go-Fast River Run. Others will prepare for this year's NCAA Atlantic Regional meet, which is set to take place at Lock Haven on Saturday, Nov. 4.
