CLARION - East Stroudsburg University, the three-time defending PSAC women's soccer champion, will enter the 2017 edition of the conference tournament as the No. 3 seed after a 0-0 (2OT) tie at Clarion in the regular season finale on Saturday night.
ESU (12-3-3, 11-3-2) finishes tied with Gannon (12-3-2, 11-3-2) for third in the conference standings. The two schools tied, 1-1, at Gannon on October 8, with the Warriors earning the tiebreaker for the No. 3 seed by virtue of their 1-0 win over No. 2 seed Kutztown on October 18.
ESU will host Slippery Rock (10-5-2, 10-4-2), the No. 6 seed, in the PSAC quarterfinals on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Eiler-Martin Stadium in the third game of a PSAC postseason tripleheader for the Warriors - field hockey (15-3, 8-2), the No. 3 seed in its tournament, hosts No. 6 Slippery Rock at 1 p.m. at Whitenight Field, followed by men's soccer (12-3-1, 8-3), the No. 4 seed in its bracket, hosting No. 5 Mercyhurst at 3:30 p.m. at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
Senior goalkeeper
Jules Harris had two saves for her 38th career shutout (32nd solo), extending both school records. She has notched a shutout in 10 of ESU's 18 games this season, including eight solo shutouts.
Krista Mosi had 12 saves for Clarion (6-7-5, 5-6-5), which completed an 18-game schedule that included just 33 total goals - 14 for and 19 against. Just six of Clarion's games featured both teams getting on the scoreboard.
The Warriors had advantages of 21-8 in shots and 6-2 in corner kicks.
ESU has won its three straight PSAC titles as the No. 1 seed in 2014, No. 7 seed in 2015 and No. 4 seed last season, compiling a 7-0-2 record while playing just four of its nine games at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
The Warriors (2014-16) and Lock Haven (1999-01) are the only PSAC schools to win three straight PSAC tournament titles. ESU's five PSAC championships (1994, 1997, 2014-16) are the most in conference history.
ESU will play Slippery Rock in the PSAC Tournament for the third straight season, winning 2-0 in the semifinals in 2015 (at Gannon) and 5-0 in the quarterfinals last year at Eiler-Martin.
The Warriors won this year's regular season meeting, 1-0, on September 30 on a 41st-minute goal by sophomore back
Jessica Woodbyrne. ESU is 4-0-2 vs. SRU since the start of the 2014 season. Five of the last nine meetings have gone to double overtime.
