ERIE – For the second-consecutive weekend, East Stroudsburg University earned a memorable win over a PSAC division leader.
After topping Southeast-leading West Chester seven days ago, ESU used an all-around team effort to hand high-flying Gannon a 3-1 setback on Saturday afternoon. Set scores were 25-22, 29-27, 15-25, 26-24.
The Warriors (14-10, 5-8 PSAC) handed the Golden Knights (21-5, 10-3 PSAC) a second loss in their last 13 matches, and they earned their first win overall in the series since 1997.
Senior
Desiree Claxton led the way for the visitors with 15 kills, 15 digs and five blocks. ESU had 16 blocks overall in the match, including seven from sophomore
Jasmine Williams (1 BS, 6 BA) and four assists apiece from sophomore
Sam Dunphy, senior
Sarah Fillman and redshirt freshman
Trea-sure Ketter.
Senior
Rosa Veliky also entered the ESU record books after totaling a team-high 26 digs. She is up to 1,006 overall, making her the 11th player in program history to surpass 1,000 digs in her collegiate career. She totaled 20+ digs for the seventh time this season and leads the team with 412 on the year.
The visitors clinched the match with a furious rally in the final set. After a convincing win in the third set, Gannon jumped out to a 10-2 advantage early in the fourth.
From that point on, the Warriors slowly chipped away at the deficit. Fillman and Ketter played a key role at the net, as each of their four blocks came in the second half of the set. The lead was down to 17-15 after three-straight kills from Dunphy, Claxton and senior
Courtney Miller, and it was reduced to 21-20 following one of Fillman and Ketter's blocks.
ESU leveled the set for the first time at 23-23 through a Gannon attack error. The Golden Knights took the following point to earn a chance to extend the match to a decisive fifth set, but the Warriors responded with a Claxton kill, a block by Miller and Dunphy, and another Gannon attack error to seal the upset.
The Warriors grabbed a 2-0 lead in the match through a similarly dramatic second set. Gannon had a pair of set points at 25-24 and 27-26 to level up the contest after ESU had previously been ahead 24-22. Facing the 27-26 deficit, the Warriors closed out the set with three straight points, capped by a Claxton/Dunphy block.
The two teams had met eight times since ESU's 3-0 win over Gannon back in 1997. The Golden Knights had won all eight meetings, surrendering only one set during that stretch from 2009-16.
The 2016 PSAC champions maintain a four-game lead over Edinboro in the PSAC Northwest standings. Kelsey Ansec (15 kills) and Rebekah Smith (12 kills) led the Gannon attack on Saturday.
The Warriors end a four-game road trip over the past two weekends with a 3-1 record. They return to Koehler Fieldhouse for the first time since Oct. 14 next Friday, hosting Slippery Rock in a PSAC match scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m.
