CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Senior
Kaylyn West placed second out of 225 runners in the women's 6k event, while sophomore
Rachael Davalos also finished in the top 10 to lead East Stroudsburg University at the DeSales Invitational on Saturday.
Davalos placed ninth with a time of 23:27.60 which was under a minute behind West's mark of 22:36.40. That helped the Warrior women to a second place finish out of 22 schools in the team standings. Senior
J.P. Montgomery led the way for the ESU men, registering an 8k time of 26:39.00 which was good enough for 11th place out of 271 runners. All five ESU men's scorers ended up in the top 25, as the Warriors ranked third out of 28 schools in the team standings.
ESU was competing in its final competition prior to this year's PSAC Championships, which will be held at California on Saturday, Oct. 21.
Seniors
Samantha Young and
Jasmine Amro joined West and Davalos in the top 20 on the women's side. Young crossed the line in 15th place with a time of 24:05.40, while Amro (24:35.20) was five spots back in 20th.
Sophomore
Jenna Vledder rounded out the scorers in 39th place after completing the race in 25:12.30. Senior
Abigail Kaspszyk (43rd, 25:23.20) and sophomore
Rachel Eidson (46th, 25:31.40) were also in the top 50 overall in the 200+ runner field.
Kutztown finished first in the team standings in the women's race with a final total of 49 points. The Warriors had 83 points on the day, while Misericordia was third with 100 points.
Montgomery finished as the top scorer for ESU men for the first time in his collegiate career. The five scorers for the Warriors were separated by only 31 seconds overall.
Sophomore
Mike Sheptuk was the men's No. 2 scorer for the second time this year, as he took 15th place with a mark of 26:46.70. Sheptuk was followed by freshman
Casey Ellis (17th, 26:47.90), senior
Dan Buccino (20th, 26:57.10) and sophomore
Jeremy Smith (24rd, 27:10.20). Other top 50 finishers included freshman
Teddy Mostellar (47th, 27:40.50) and junior
Tom Ciaccio (48th, 27:41.90), while sophomore
Jordan Cruise (27:48.20) was just outside in 52nd.
Messiah (39 points) edged out York (45 points) for first place in the men's standings. ESU's 87 points were well ahead of fourth-place Bloomsburg (151 points).
Next up for both teams is the PSAC Championships in two weeks. The women's 6k race will begin at 10 a.m., with the men's 8k competition set to follow at 11 a.m.
