LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A third-straight outstanding season came to an end for East Stroudsburg University on Friday.
Jazmin Petrantonio and Mary Spisak scored first-half goals for Shippensburg, and the Raiders held off a surge by ESU after the intermission to hold on for a 2-1 victory in the NCAA Division II Field Hockey Final Four.
Junior forward
Bailey Quinn scored her team-leading 13th goal of the season for the Warriors (17-5), who advanced to the NCAA tournament for a third-consecutive year. Defending DII champions Shippensburg (16-4) advances to play either LIU Post or Millersville in Sunday's title game.
"I'm very proud of these young ladies and their accomplishments throughout the season," head coach
Sandy Miller said. "We worked very hard all year, and while this is one of the down moments I'm pleased that we fought all the way to the end. Even with one second left we were still battling."
Senior goalkeeper
Halle Frisco made eight saves for ESU, including three in 1-on-1 situations early in the first half. Those stops, paired with a defensive save by senior back
Sydney McCarthy 4:16 into the contest, kept the game scoreless early on.
The Raiders, though, were rewarded for their pressure in the 17th minute, as Petrantonio fired in a high shot from the top of the circle off a penalty corner. Spisak added a second marker for Shippensburg with 3:03 left in the half, tucking a low shot into the left corner on a mini-breakaway in front.
Shots were 9-4 in favor of the Raiders at halftime. ESU had a significant increase in possession after the break, holding their opponents without a shot for nearly 20 minutes. Quinn had two of the Warriors' three shots during that span, and the second of those attempts broke the shutout. Junior back
Ashley Ceschini made a run down the right side in the 49th minute, and she sent a cross towards the center which Quinn swept past Shippensburg goalie Ally Mooney.
Ceschini registered her first-career collegiate point and assist on the play, while Quinn scored for a fourth time in the past four games.
The Raiders called timeout shortly afterwards, and were able to hold ESU without a shot for the remainder of the contest. Shippensburg will be aiming for the school's third field hockey championship on Sunday.
McCarthy, Frisco, and fellow seniors
Ashley Chioda,
Hannah Caplan and
Melanie Shambaugh played in their final game for the program, with each having appeared in and started all 21 games on the year. McCarthy, Chioda and Shambaugh will remain in Louisville to participate in the NFHCA DII Senior Game on Saturday.
"We lose another great senior class, just like we did last year," Miller remarked. "They were key players who set an example and provided strong leadership, but we have a good system in place. We will continue to push forward and be ready to go again next season."
ESU's seniors combined for a 62-22 record during their four years with the program. The Warriors were 51-12 in the past three seasons, winning their first-ever DII championship in 2015 and qualifying again for the national tournament in the 2016 and 2017 campaigns.
