EAST STROUDSBURG – Sophomore
Sarah Smith led the team in kills in both matches, including a 12-kill effort in the nightcap which helped East Stroudsburg University secure a tri-match split at Koehler Fieldhouse on Saturday.
The Warriors (15-12) topped Mercy by a 3-0 final after dropping a 3-1 decision to Edinboro in the opener.
Set scores in the ESU victory were 25-11, 25-18, 25-17, with the Warriors securing their most wins in a season since the 2008 squad also had 15 victories. Eight different players had at least one kill against the Mavericks (7-23), with seniors
Desiree Claxton and
Courtney Miller following Smith with six kills apiece.
Smith and seniors
Erica Cunningham and
Sarah Fillman also added four aces each. The Warriors ended up with a 17-2 advantage on the service line, with the 17 aces a new season high. The four aces individually for both Smith and Fillman were new career highs.
ESU managed a .227 attack percentage overall as a team compared to a .073 output for the visitors.
That win offset a 3-1 (25-19, 18-25, 25-21, 25-21) setback to Edinboro to begin the day. Cierah Jackson totaled 20 kills to power the offensive attack for the Fighting Scots (18-8, 8-7 PSAC).
Smith (16) and Claxton (11) each had double-digit kills, with Smith adding 18 digs for her 13th double-double of the season. Miller, meanwhile, was one shy of a season high with seven block assists at the net.
Each of the final two sets went down to the wire. A Smith kill capped a 4-0 run for the home side which reduced Edinboro's third-set advantage to 20-19, but the Fighting Scots won four of the next five points to regain control.
The teams were within three points for most of the fourth set as well. Smith capped another 4-0 stretch to put the Warriors in front 20-17 late, but Jackson had three kills during an 8-1 run for Edinboro to end the match.
ESU's set win in the second was the first time that the Warriors have taken a set off the Fighting Scots since 2012. Edinboro has reached the NCAA DII tournament in each of the previous three seasons.
ESU has three matches remaining in the regular season. Next up is a 7 p.m. road contest at Kutztown on Tuesday, with the Warriors looking to complete a second-consecutive season sweep over the Golden Bears.
Note:
Prior to the Edinboro match, sophomore
