BETHLEHEM – Junior
Aspen Gaita broke or matched six East Stroudsburg University records during her first year with the track & field program, and she picked up right where she left off in her first competition of the 2017-18 season.
Gaita shattered her own ESU record in the long jump, helping her cruise to a first place finish in the pentathlon on Day 1 of Lehigh's Fast Times Before Finals meet.
The Stroudsburg native entered Friday tied with Leslie Martin for first place in the school record books with a top long jump effort of 18-1. She upped her standard to an NCAA DII provisional mark of 18-10 3/4 at Lehigh, besting second-place Caroline Lewis from West Chester by over seven inches.
That performance came in the fourth of five contested events in the pentathlon. Gaita also took first place in the 60-meter hurdles (NCAA DII provisional time of 8.81) and high jump (PSAC-qualifying clearance of 5-5). She was second in the 800m (2:34.90) and third in the shot put (28-11 1/4) to give her a final points total of 3,607. That is over 70 points above her score of 3,534 at Lehigh last December and it is less than a hundred off her ESU record of 3,701 set at Bucknell last January.
Junior
Michayla Weitman also took part in the pentathlon, and she finished fifth out of 17 competitors with a final score of 2,895 points. That PR moves up to her No. 9 at ESU all-time, and she also had a PSAC-qualifying mark in the long jump (17-2) and set an indoor PR in the shot put (28-9 1/4).
Other ESU participants on Friday were senior
Jeremy Rigotti in the 5,000m and sophomore
Austin Horner in the beginning of the heptathlon. Rigotti posted a PSAC-qualifying time of 15:49.13 while taking second place in his race, and Horner was in ninth place after his first three events. Horner's mark of 21-11 in the long jump is a PSAC-qualifying distance.
The majority of the meet's events will be contested on Saturday, with action scheduled to begin with the conclusion of the heptathlon at 9 a.m. Live results throughout the day will be available
