ESU has now won seven games in a row, continuing its longest win streak since 2007, and tonight's victory completes the program's first season sweep of Kutztown since 2012. Alex Heck had 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Golden Bears, who had a three-game winning run snapped.
The Warrior offense was cold throughout the opening 20 minutes, with ESU held to 35.5 percent shooting (11-31) in the first half. That allowed Kutztown to take a 34-28 lead into the intermission, and the advantage was still 41-34 with 3:06 remaining in the third quarter.
Back-to-back baskets by Brown began a 10-1 run from the visitors to conclude the frame. A layup by senior forward
Allison Howard gave the Warriors their first lead of the half with 1:02 remaining at 42-41. After a Kutztown free throw on the other end, Lapotsky sank a layup with eight seconds left to put ESU back ahead heading into the fourth.
The Warriors upped the lead to 50-42 on another basket by Lapotsky and four points by sophomore guard
Noelle Powell to begin the final 10 minutes. The advantage grew to as large as 55-46 with 3:43 to play on a layup by senior guard
Madison Tamburini.
The Golden Bears pulled within three points at 57-54 with under a minute on the clock, but two free throws from Lapotsky with 22 seconds remaining sealed the victory.
Howard ended the night with a team-high 11 points and eight rebounds. She is now up to 1,219 points for her career, moving her past Jessica Martin (2011-15) for eighth on ESU's all-time scoring list.
Lapotsky's 10 points led the Warrior reserves, and it was her first double-digit scoring effort since she netted a season-high 13 at Gannon on Dec. 10. Senior guard
Rachel Falkowski added eight points (3-4 FG) and four rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench.
ESU held Kutztown to only 20 points in the second half. The Warriors pulled out the win despite scoring their fewest points in a contest since Jan. 9 in a 68-58 loss to West Chester.
With a loss by the Golden Rams to Shippensburg on Wednesday, ESU is now three games ahead of West Chester for second place in the PSAC East with three games left on the regular season schedule. The Raiders (21-5, 16-4 PSAC) clinched first place with tonight's victory.
The Warriors are back at Koehler Fieldhouse for their next two games, beginning with a matchup against Bloomsburg at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Huskies (9-14, 8-11) have won eight of their last 10, including a 69-66 triumph over Mansfield on Wednesday.
