MELBOURNE, Fla. – Senior C
Danielle Wissinger had three hits and three RBIs, but Stonehill used a late offensive outburst to hand East Stroudsburg University an 8-7 defeat in eight innings to conclude the Florida Tech Brawl at the Beach Tournament on Sunday afternoon.
The Skyhawks (1-4) scored five unanswered runs to take a 6-5 lead in the top half of the seventh. ESU (1-4) extended the game with a run in the bottom of the frame, but Stonehill tallied two of the three runs in the eighth inning to escape with their first victory of the season.
Junior 2B
Heather Visco went 2 for 4 with two runs scored, and freshman OF
Kaylee Hazewski also plated two runs for the Warriors. Senior LHP
Rachael Liguori went the distance in the circle, allowing four earned runs over eight innings while striking out five.
The first four ESU batters reached base in the opening inning. Sophomore DP
Madison Vicendese started things off with a double to left center, and the bases were soon loaded after Hazewski walked and Visco was hit by a pitch. Wissinger came through with a single up the middle to give the Warriors an early 2-0 advantage.
After Stonehill cut the deficit in half with a third-inning sacrifice fly, ESU added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Wissinger and senior SS
Rae Holden had RBIs, and Visco swiped home on a double steal with sophomore PR
Kendra Barlotta. The Warriors had a total of eight stolen bases in the contest: three by Hazewski and one apiece by Visco, Barlotta, Vicendese, Wissinger and junior OF
Katherine Liedberg.
Four ESU errors helped the Skyhawks plate five runs in their next two trips to the plate (two in the sixth, three in the seventh). Needing a run to send the game to extras, Visco reached on an error to begin the bottom of the seventh. She advanced to second on a Wissinger single, made it to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a second Stonehill error. The Warriors would go on to load the bases with one out, but they could not push across the winning run.
International tiebreaker rules went into effect in the eighth, with a runner placed on second base to begin each half inning. Aided by that initial baserunner, the Skyhawks used four straight one-out singles to take an 8-6 lead.
Hazewski scored sophomore 3B
Samantha Pickar with a one-out single in the bottom half of the inning, and she made it to third base after a steal and a Visco single. Wissinger was then intentionally walked, but ESU again left the bases loaded when a strikeout and lineout ended the contest.
Michelle Carbone earned the win for Stonehill after allowing two runs (none earned) over the final three innings in the circle.
The Warriors will return to action with a doubleheader at Bowie State on Tuesday, March 7. Game 1 is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. that afternoon.
