YORK, Pa. – Junior
Annie Fagan concluded a remarkable weekend with a school record in the 100-yard freestyle to lead East Stroudsburg University on the final day of the 2017 PSAC Swimming Championships on Sunday.
The Warriors finished the meet in ninth place with 402 points after six more individuals added to the team's total on Day 4.
Fagan first bested Karoline Vavra's old record of 53.18 in the morning preliminary session, qualifying for the 'A' final after touching the wall in 53.12. That time was the eighth fastest out of 52 swimmers in the event.
The Rockville, Md., native had some additional speed saved for the final, as she lowered her preliminary mark down to 52.84 to earn a seventh place finish and 23 points for ESU's team score. Fagan entered PSACs with a career-best time of 54.23 in the 100 free; she took 1.39 seconds off that effort on Sunday. Vavra's record was established four years ago in the preliminary round of the 2013 PSAC meet.
Fagan's finish was one of four top-15 showings for the Warriors on Day 4. One of the others also came in the 100 free, as freshman
Olivia Lukshides took 14th place with a 'B' final time of 53.90. Lukshides, who is ranked No. 3 all-time in the event, qualified for the evening after completing her preliminary race in 53.69.
ESU also had two swimmers reach finals in the 200 breaststroke. Junior
Kate Zimmerman was the No. 11 qualifier in the morning with a season-best effort of 2:28.59, and she placed 14th at night with a time of 2:29.43. Fellow junior
Shirley Samson finished in 20th place with a 'C' final time of 2:31.69.
Freshman
Tarah Killane scored for the Warriors for the third time at PSACs, and her 15th place showing in the 1650 free on Sunday was her highest placement of the weekend. Killane, who will end her debut season ranked No. 2 at ESU all-time in the 500 and 1650 free races, completed the longest event of the meet in 18:18.89.
Junior
Allison Cardow registered a new PR with her 22nd place finish in the 200 backstroke. Cardow placed sixth in the 'C' final with a time of 2:12.10 which is No. 5 in ESU program history.
The final event of the meet was the 400 free relay, where Fagan nearly broke the 100 free school record for a third time on the day. She swam the initial leg in 52.87, three-hundredths off her 'A' final time. Senior
Victoria Gurdak, senior
Kelly Buyaskas and Lukshides joined Fagan to complete the race in an eighth place time of 3:34.81 (1.11 off the school record).
A trio of seniors concluded their ESU careers with personal best times in the morning session. Buyaskas (54.66) and Gurdak (55.32) established new top marks in the 50 free, while
Kaitlyn Casciole (2:15.73) took over three seconds off her previous PR in the 200 back. Buyaskas ended the meet with PRs in all four of her individual events.
The Warriors finish PSACs in ninth place for a fifth consecutive year. They were 94 points ahead of Millersville in 10th place. West Chester took first with 1,817 points, well ahead of second-place Bloomsburg (1,073.5 points).
