EAST STROUDSBURG – Junior
Kate Zimmerman established a new Koehler Fieldhouse record in the 50-yard breaststroke to lead East Stroudsburg University at the ESU Invitational on Saturday, the team's final tune-up prior to the PSAC Championships.
Zimmerman touched in at 30.70 in the event, breaking the old pool mark of 31.69 set by Lock Haven's Brittany Rehrig in 2011. She was only 0.18 off the ESU record set by Sami Vavra back in 2013.
That performance highlighted a day where the primary focus was preparing for the upcoming conference meet, set to take place from Feb. 16-19 in York, Pa. The Warriors have 13 swimmers who have posted a total of 35 PSAC qualifying times this season, led by five from junior
Allison Cardow.
Cardow took first place in the 100 backstroke (1:05.25) and the 200 freestyle (2:04.59) on Saturday, and she finished as the runner-up in the 500 free (5:42.88).
Freshman
Tarah Killane beat out a field of four ESU swimmers in the 1650 free (18:49.62), and senior
Kelly Buyaskas out-touched three other Warriors in the 100 individual medley (1:05.79).
Buyaskas was one of nine ESU seniors recognized prior the final home meet of their collegiate careers.
Kaitlyn Casciole,
Lauren Cione,
Victoria Gurdak,
Katherine Herr,
Kayla Keating,
Jennifer Lauer,
Nicole Palmasano and
Samantha Pelletier were also honored for their contributions to the program.
Keating, Cione, Lauer and Herr teamed up for a first place showing in the 200 free relay, completing the race in 1:51.87. Keating also placed first in a field of 10 swimmers in the 100 free (57.11), while freshman
Allison Young (2:26.00), junior
Rebecca Samson (2:27.25) and Casciole (2:27.35) finished 1-2-3 in the 200 back.
This year's PSAC Championships will be contested at the Graham Aquatic Center in York, with ESU looking to improve on a ninth place finish last February.
