BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – East Stroudsburg University senior
Steve Morgan's first trip to the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships was well worth the wait.
Morgan, who qualified for nationals for the first time in 2017 after registering NCAA provisional marks on five occasions in previous seasons, took ninth place in the 60-meter hurdles on Friday afternoon to earn second team All-America accolades. He becomes the 25th All-American in ESU men's track & field history.
Morgan entered the meet ranked No. 15 out of 15 competitors in the event, but he jumped up six spots after crossing the line in a personal-best time of 8.05. His official time of 8.048 was a microscopic six-thousandths of a second back of Southern Connecticut State's Yakabu Ibrahim (8.042) for the eighth and final qualifying spot for Saturday afternoon's championship race.
The new PR places Morgan one-hundredth of a second behind Rusty Smith's school record of 8.04, which was established at the NCAA Indoor Championships in 2008. His previous top time in the event was 8.06, set at both the Armory Invitational on Feb. 3 and in his PSAC title-winning run on Feb. 26.
Morgan adds All-America recognition to an ESU resume which includes five PSAC championships (three in the outdoor 110m hurdles, two in the indoor 60m hurdles), four PSAC Athlete of the Week awards, a PSAC Outdoor Freshman of the Year honor in 2014 and a school record in the 110m hurdles.
The Warriors have now had four All-Americans in the past four indoor seasons. Seth Bailey placed third in the high jump in 2014, while
Travis Toth (10th – weight throw) and
William Berry (12th – high jump) were each second team All-Americans last winter.
The outdoor portion of the track & field season is set to begin next weekend, with ESU traveling to Division I Charlotte to take part in the 49er Classic on March 17-18.
