HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Sophomore
Lauren Morrissey rallied for a three-set super tie-break victory at No. 6 singles to lift East Stroudsburg University to a 5-4 victory over Clarion on Monday morning.
Morrissey's win claimed the decisive point for the Warriors (1-3) in their first victory of the season. Junior
Elizabeth Bartoli also earned a super tie-break triumph at No. 4, as ESU split the three singles matches after taking 2 of 3 in doubles.
Clarion's Katie Benson blanked Morrissey by a 6-0 margin in the opening set, but the Bethlehem native earned a 6-3 win in the second set, and she dispatched Benson by a 10-6 final in the tiebreaker to improve her season record to 3-3.
Bartoli was forced to a deciding super tie-breaker after dropping an 8-6 second-set tie-break to Michelle Petrilla. She had no issues in the super, however, winning 10 of 12 points to secure the victory.
Freshman
Marina Zardet claimed the other singles point for the Warriors, cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Vinisha Reddy at the No. 3 position to claim her team-leading fourth win of the season.
Bartoli and Zardet teamed up for an 8-2 triumph over Petrilla and Allison Probst at No. 2 doubles, while junior
Devin Presby and freshman
Aubrianna Stetina topped Benson and Reddy by an 8-6 final at No. 3.
Monday's victory was ESU's third-straight overall against the Golden Eagles (3-3). The Warriors took on Clarion after their originally-scheduled match against Erskine was canceled the previous evening.
ESU continues its spring break trip in Hilton Head on Wednesday morning, competing against Belmont Abbey in a match scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
