BOWIE, Md. – Senior
Danielle Wissinger went 3 for 3 with a grand slam and eight RBIs, the most by an East Stroudsburg University player since at least 2002, to help the Warriors defeat Bowie State by a 15-0 final in Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader, salvaging a split after the host Bulldogs pulled out a 3-2 win in the opener.
Junior
Katherine Liedberg reached base in all five plate appearances on the afternoon, going 5 for 5 with three stolen bases. ESU (2-5) totaled 10 steals overall in the two games, led by four from freshman
Kaylee Hazewski.
Senior LHP
Rachael Liguori earned her first victory of the season in Game 2, allowing only one hit over five scoreless innings. She registered her 36th career complete game and tossed her seventh shutout as a Warrior.
ESU is back in action with five contests in Salem, Va., this weekend, beginning with a 7 p.m. tilt against Chowan on Friday night.
Game 1: Bowie St. 3, ESU 2
The score was tied 1-1 entering the fifth inning of the opener, with Bowie St. scoring in the first and the Warriors tying the game on a two-out RBI double by junior
Heather Visco in the top-half of the third.
Some effective small ball gave ESU its first lead in the fifth. Sophomore
Kendra Barlotta pinch-ran for sophomore
Madison Vicendese after Vicendese was hit by a pitch with one out in the frame. Barlotta stole both second and third base, and she crossed home on a passed ball to make it 2-1.
RBI hits by Inaya Jones and Megan Visele helped the Bulldogs rally with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Warriors put two runners on in their final trip to the plate, but were unable to push across the tying run.
Stefanie Ray (2-2) allowed one earned run on six hits in a complete game victory for the home side. Junior RHP
Mary Wallick (1-2) struck out five over six innings of work for ESU, allowing three earned runs on seven hits.
Game 2: ESU 15, Bowie St. 0 (5 innings)
The Warriors scored in every inning of Game 2, totaling 17 hits and six stolen bases in the victory. Wissinger broke the game open in the fourth, as her grand slam capped off a six-run frame for the visitors which upped the score to 11-0.
Wissinger also drove in runs with a sacrifice fly in the first inning, a triple in the third and a two-run single in the fifth. The previous RBI high for an ESU player in the past 15 seasons was a seven-RBI effort by Jen Veronesi in 2007.
Her grand slam was the eighth by a Warrior since 2002. Wissinger is currently hitting .421 on the year with a team-high 12 RBIs.
Hazewski was nearly as impressive offensively, finishing the contest 4 for 4 with four runs scored and three stolen bases. She has eight steals in nine attempts through ESU's first seven games, already only five off the freshman record of 13 set by Barlotta last spring.
Vicendese added three hits, two runs scored and two RBIs from the leadoff position. She went 5 for 7 with a HBP across the two games.
Six ESU players ended Game 2 with multiple hits, as Visco, Liedberg and Barlotta added two hits apiece. Barlotta registered her first-career multi-hit game, and she also drove in her first two runs as a Warrior.
Liguori (1-2) tossed ESU's first one-hitter since 2013 (
Laura Suits at Lock Haven). She faced the minimum possible number of batters, as Wissinger threw out Ja'seph Smith attempting to steal second after reaching on a one-out single in the bottom of the first. Wissinger has now thrown out three runners in her first four chances behind the plate this year.
The Warriors have 22 stolen bases on 25 attempts to begin the season. They are averaging 3.1 steals per game thus far, a total which leads all PSAC schools.
