EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior LHP
Rachael Liguori drilled her first career home run, and freshman
Rachel Grabowski went 3 for 3 with two RBIs as East Stroudsburg University held off Nyack for a 6-5 victory in Game 2 of Monday's doubleheader against Nyack at Zimbar Field.
ESU (9-16) dropped the opener by an 8-2 final, with the visiting Warriors (5-22) plating seven runs in the final two innings to break open what had been a 1-0 contest.
Senior
Danielle Wissinger added two hits and two RBIs in Game 2 for the home side, while junior
Mary Wallick chipped in two hits and two runs scored. Wallick had hits in both contests this afternoon, extending her hitting streak to 16 games overall and continuing the longest run in program history since at least 2002.
Liguori went 1 for 1 with a pair of walks at the plate, and she struck out a season-high eight batters while picking up her seventh victory of the season in the circle.
ESU concludes a stretch of three doubleheaders in three days on Tuesday afternoon at Bloomfield, with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
Game 1: Nyack 8, ESU 2
The visitors quickly pulled ahead with a first-inning run off freshman RHP
Lily Moresco (0-2). For the next four innings, however, Moresco kept ESU in the game, allowing only one hit in four scoreless frames.
Nyack starter Brittany Blair retired the first 11 Warriors before Wallick reached on a two-out double in the fourth, and she kept the home side off the scoreboard until the final inning of the contest.
The visitors added to their lead on a two-run homer off the left field foul pole from Katalina Padilla in the sixth, and they managed five additional runs in the top of the seventh.
Freshman RHP
Erica Molinaro registered her first-career hit and RBI to break the shutout in the bottom of the inning, and junior
Madison Oren added an RBI single of her own to plate ESU's second run.
Nicole Wallick led Nyack offensively, finishing 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Game 2: ESU 6, Nyack 5
The Warriors quickly jumped on Nyack starter Stephanie White in the second game, scoring six runs in the first three innings.
Three of those runs came in the opening frame, with Wissinger and junior
Heather Visco delivering RBI singles while Grabowski tallied an RBI double.
Liguori led off the second with her solo home run, a long shot to right-center on a 3-1 pitch. The senior, who received her first-career plate appearances during Sunday's doubleheader, reached base in all three trips on Monday.
Wissinger and Grabowski each came through with RBI triples in the third. Wissinger is now tied with Wallick for the team lead with three triples on the year, while Grabowski registered her first three-bagger.
Those six runs held up despite a late rally from Nyack, which scored three runs in the fifth and two more in the seventh. The visitors had the bases loaded with only one out after plating their two runs in the final inning, but Liguori induced a fielder's choice, throwing the runner from third out at home after a grounder to the circle, and a strikeout to seal the victory.
Liguori's eighth and final strikeout was the 300th of her ESU career. She is currently fourth all-time in program history in K's. With her 29th career victory, she moved into sole possession of ninth place in program history in that category.
Making the start in right field, sophomore
Kendra Barlotta went 2 for 2 in stolen base attempts. She now has 15 steals in 17 attempts overall, a total which ranks her tied for fourth in the PSAC. Freshman
Tiana Vega-Cosme added her second steal of the season after coming on as a courtesy runner.
