EAST STROUDSBURG - Junior midfielder
Chessie Rahmer and sophomore attack
TJ Jefferis scored four goals each as East Stroudsburg University posted a 14-12 win over Shippensburg in PSAC women's lacrosse on Wednesday afternoon at Whitenight Field.
ESU (10-2, 6-1) set a school record with its fifth straight PSAC win, which includes road wins at No. 16 Lock Haven (10-7) and No. 18 Seton Hill (12-11) last week.
Freshman goalkeeper
Tatyana Petteway made 12 saves for the Warriors, who prevailed despite being outshot (33-28) for just the third time this season. Petteway entered the week as the PSAC leader in save percentage (.539), second in saves per game (9.9) and fourth in goals against average (8.83).
ESU held its second annual Alyssa Oxenford Memorial Game, honoring former Warriors defender Alyssa Oxenford, who was diagnosed with leukemia in May 2014 following her junior season at ESU and passed away in August 2015. The Warriors recognized Oxenford's parents, Mike and Lynn, and held a moment of silence prior to the game.
All four Warrior seniors who were freshmen on the 2014 team with Oxenford made contributions - attack
Lauren Green (goal, 3 assists), midfielder
Emily Fitzsimmons (goal, 4 draw controls, caused turnover, ground ball), defender
Bethany Cunningham (6 caused turnovers, 4 ground balls) and defender
Kerry Mulcahy (caused turnover).
Shippensburg (6-6, 2-6), in its first season under head coach Nicole Miller, a 2014 ESU graduate, was led by Max Barkley and Allison Fugate (3 goals each) and Amanda Frank (2 goals, 4 assists).
ESU led 4-0 after the first nine minutes on two goals each by Jefferis and Rahmer, and maintained an 8-4 halftime advantage with Rahmer scoring all four of her goals in the opening half.
The Warriors led throughout, but Shippensburg pulled within 11-9 with a three-goal run midway through the second half.
Jefferis netted a pair of goals in a span of 13 second to give ESU a 13-9 edge with 10:53 remaining.
The Warriors led 14-10 with 6:51 remaining after a goal by freshman attack
Cassidy McKenna, assisted by sophomore midfielder
Emma Rufolo, the reigning PSAC Athlete of the Week.
Ship scored the final two goals, closing the margin to 14-12 with 3:34 left, but ESU won the ensuing draw control and didn't allow Ship into its attacking half down the stretch.
Cunningham led a defensive effort that forced 29 Shippensburg turnovers, tied for the most by an ESU opponent this season.
Junior midfielder Alica Stratten had a goal, two assists, five draw controls, three caused turnovers and six ground balls in a strong all-around performance. Rufolo had four caused turnovers and four ground balls to go with her assist.
Sophomore attack
Brooke Fritz added a goal and an assist. Freshman midfielder
Juliane Fitzsimmons scored her first career goal on a free position shot with 16:49 remaining which gave ESU an 11-6 lead, its biggest of the game.
Ship held a 16-11 advantage in draw controls, including eight by Barkley, which translated to its 33-28 edge in shots.
Petteway limited Ship to a 3-for-10 mark on free position shots. She has had at least as many saves as goals allowed in all but three of her 10 appearances in goal as a freshman.
The Warriors host No. 10-ranked Mercyhurst (8-2, 6-1) in a key PSAC game on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Whitenight Field.
