EAST STROUDSBURG – Fresh off of clinching its first PSAC women's tennis tournament appearance since 2011 over the weekend, East Stroudsburg University will look to extend its stay on Tuesday, traveling to Bloomsburg for a quarterfinal match set to begin at 4 p.m.
The Warriors (4-8, 2-3 PSAC) wrapped up the No. 3 seed in the East with a 7-2 win over Kutztown on Saturday. The Huskies (5-6, 4-1 PSAC) enter on a three-match winning streak, most-recently topping Kutztown by an identical 7-2 margin last Tuesday.
The quarterfinal winner advances to take on West No. 1 Mercyhurst (16-1, 6-0 PSAC) in the semifinals at 11 a.m. on Friday. Bloomsburg will serve as the host for both the semifinal and championship rounds.
ESU has made few changes to its starting lineup this season, with the Warriors rolling with the same singles and doubles order for the past four matches.
Freshman
Marina Zardet, who earned PSAC East Athlete of the Week recognition earlier on Monday, has led the team throughout the spring from the No. 3 singles position. She is 9-4 overall in duals, including a 4-1 mark against PSAC schools. Zardet claimed one of ESU's two points in a 7-2 setback at Bloomsburg on April 5, topping Catherine Garrity by a 6-3, 6-2 margin.
The Warriors' other victory in the regular season meeting between the teams was an 8-5 win for junior
Devin Presby and freshman
Aubrianna Stetina at No. 3 doubles. ESU was also competitive at No. 2 doubles, and the Warriors were within striking distance in several singles matches, winning at least three games in a set in 4 of 6 matchups.
The doubles teams of Presby/Stetina and Zardet/junior
Elizabeth Bartoli at No. 2 each went 3-2 in PSAC duals this spring, and the duos combined for 11 dual wins overall. After Zardet, Bartoli, senior
Kayla Loar and
Lauren Morrissey have added the most singles points for the Warriors. The trio won a combined 13 dual singles matches, including two apiece against PSAC opposition. Bartoli has played exclusively at No. 4, while Loar slots in at No. 5 and Morrissey plays at No. 6.
Senior
Amber Jadus and Presby have held down the top two singles spots throughout the season. Presby was a first team All-PSAC East singles player last spring, while this year's No. 1 doubles duo of Jadus and Loar were first team All-PSAC East doubles performers in 2015-16.
Head coach
Al McCormick is in the midst of his 14th season at ESU. In addition to PSAC tournament appearances in 2011 and 2009, he led the Warriors to their lone NCAA tournament appearance in 2010, with the program finishing that season with an overall record of 14-9.
