Heather Visco, junior
Mary Wallick and senior
Danielle Wissinger each homered in Game 1, with the trio combining to go 7 for 10 with six RBIs and six runs scored. Wissinger's long ball was her fifth of the season, and she now has 31 RBIs on the year. That total is three shy of the program record set by Ashley Miller in 2005.
Wallick collected the 50th RBI of her career with her two-run shot in the fourth inning of the opener, and she added another home run in the first inning of Game 2. Wallick is batting .487 with 18 extra base hits and 23 RBIs since March 10, registering at least one hit in 23 of 24 appearances.
ESU (12-21, 3-7) returns to conference play with a home doubleheader against PSAC East leaders Kutztown (25-10, 8-2) on Friday. Game 1 is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Zimbar Field.
Game 1: Wilmington 15, ESU 7 (6 innings)
The Wildcats did most of their damage in a seven-run bottom of the second, with the inning highlighted by a three-run homer from Becca Stanley and a grand slam by Kaitlyn Slater. That made the score 7-1, and the Warriors would not get closer than two runs the rest of the way.
Visco and Wissinger's home runs both came in the top of the third. Visco's long ball was her second of the season and the eighth of her ESU career. She finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs, registering her ninth multi-hit effort of the season. Wissinger, meanwhile, reached base in all three trips, going 2 for 2 with a HBP. She leads the Warriors with nine multi-RBI games this spring.
Wallick went 3 for 4 with three runs scored and two RBIs at the plate. The three-hit game was her first of the season after previously recording 12 two-hit performances. One of those hits was her 12th double of the season, moving her within two of the program record of 14 established by Marlene Renfer in 1997.
Rosa'Lynn Burton and Jazmeen Llamas each had four hits at the top of the lineup for the Wildcats, who ended the contest with a total of 20 hits overall. Slater finished with five RBIs, ending the game on a run-scoring single with no outs in the sixth.
The 22 runs scored were the most in a game involving ESU since the Warriors topped Virginia State by a 19-10 final on March 11 last season.
Game 2: Wilmington 15, ESU 1 (5 innings)
Wallick provided the lone bright spot with her first-inning homer. ESU managed five hits in all, with the other four all singles.
The Wildcats scored in all four of their trips to the plate. Seven players had multiple hits, and Slater led the way with four RBIs.
Danielle Bradley earned the victory in the circle, striking out five batters over five innings of work.
Schedule Note:
ESU's doubleheader at Bridgeport on Tuesday, April 25 has been cancelled due to scheduling conflicts. The games will not be made up.
