MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Senior LHP
Rachael Liguori tossed her eighth career shutout (second of 2017) to help East Stroudsburg University earn a split at Millersville in Sunday's PSAC doubleheader. The Warriors prevailed 2-0 in Game 2 after falling 6-0 in the opener.
Liguori allowed only three hits while striking out three to improve her season record to 5-3. She retired the first 10 batters and worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning to seal the win. RBI singles from senior
Danielle Wissinger and junior
Mary Wallick in the first were all ESU would need on the offensive end.
RHP Cassidy Pinchorski took the loss in Game 2 for the Marauders (15-14, 2-2 PSAC) after she had shutout the Warriors (7-10, 1-1 PSAC) in the first contest of the afternoon.
ESU continues a stretch of three doubleheaders in as many days on Monday afternoon, with the Warriors hosting West Chester in their home opener at Zimbar Field. Game 1 is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
Game 1: Millersville 6, ESU 0
The Marauders jumped ahead quickly in the opener, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded and one out, Kaelyn Buskey delivered an RBI single to left field to bring home the game's first run, and Megan McCurdy then cleared the bases with a three-run double to center off of Wallick (2-5).
That outburst was more than enough for Pinchorski (9-7), who pitched a four-hit shutout in the circle while striking out four ESU batters.
The Warriors' best chance to score came in the top of the second, as Wissinger reached on an error and Wallick doubled to put runners on second and third with nobody out. Pinchorski, though, retired the next three in order to preserve the shutout.
The Marauders added solo insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Freshman
Kaylee Hazewski went 2 for 3 with her team-leading 20th stolen base to lead the offense. The multi-hit game was her sixth of the season.
Game 2: ESU 2, Millersville 0
The roles were reversed in the following contest, as this time it was the Warriors who grabbed an early lead in the first inning. The rally began with a two-out double from junior
Heather Visco. She was brought home on a single by Wissinger, who advanced to second on the play. Wallick then came through with an RBI base knock of her own to up the margin to 2-0.
Liguori was in charge for the rest of the game, keeping the Marauders off the bases in 5 of 7 innings. Millersville stranded two after back-to-back one out singles in the fourth inning, and the home side had its final chance to score in the sixth.
Raeann Buskey reached on an error with two outs in that frame, and Brittany Smith followed with a single to put two runners on for cleanup hitter Maggie Murphy. Liguori, though, induced a popout to sophomore
Samantha Pickar at shortstop to end the threat.
Liguori registered her sixth complete game while lowering her season ERA to 3.63. She has held opponents to a .251 batting average so far this spring.
Wallick reached base in all three plate appearances for the Warriors, finishing 2 for 2 with a walk and her third stolen base of the year. Wissinger, meanwhile, went 2 for 3 in her seventh multi-hit game of 2017.
Pinchorski (9-8) gave up six hits and three walks in a complete game effort for the Marauders.
