EAST STROUDSBURG – RHP Savannah Nierintz allowed two runs over 12 innings across both games, and Kutztown scored two unearned runs in the seventh inning of Game 2 to complete a doubleheader sweep over East Stroudsburg University at Zimbar Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Bears (27-12, 10-2 PSAC) took the opener 9-0 in five innings, and they won the nightcap by a 3-2 final.
Senior LHP
Rachael Liguori took a tough loss in Game 2 despite allowing no earned runs over seven innings in the circle. She gave up six hits and struck out one, and also went 2 for 2 with an RBI double and a HBP at the plate. Sophomore
Kendra Barlotta had the other RBI in the contest for the Warriors (12-23, 3-9 PSAC).
ESU returns to action on Monday, traveling to West Chester for a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
Game 1: Kutztown 9, ESU 0 (5 innings)
The Golden Bears scored multiple runs in each of the first three innings to quickly put the game out of reach. Sara Keeny went 3 for 4 with three runs scored at the top of the lineup, while Angie Carty and Gabby Tareila each knocked in a pair of runs.
Nierintz retired the side in order in four of her five innings of work, including each of the first three frames. An error, a walk by junior
Mary Wallick and a single by senior
Danielle Wissinger loaded the bases for the Warriors in the bottom of the fourth with one out, but Nierintz recovered to retire each of the next two batters.
Nierintz struck out five batters, needing 83 pitches to earn the complete game victory.
Game 2: Kutztown 3, ESU 2
Both Liguori and Nierintz kept the opposing hitters in check through the first three innings, and the ESU offense was the first to break through in the fourth. After the first two batters were retired, freshman
Rachel Grabowski delivered a single down the right field line, and she made it home on a long double to straightaway center by Liguori.
Junior
Katherine Liedberg extended the inning with a single to left, and Barlotta doubled the Warrior advantage on a clutch single up the middle.
Liguori and Barlotta each picked up their third RBIs of the season. Liguori is hitting .467 (7-15) with a .733 slugging percentage in the six games where she has appeared in the lineup this spring.
The Golden Bears cut the deficit in half on an unearned run in the fifth, but a 1-2-3 sixth from Liguori helped the home side maintain a 2-1 lead heading into the final frame.
Kutztown had runners on first and second with two outs in the seventh when the tying and go-ahead runs scored on back-to-back ESU errors. Nierintz then struck out two in a perfect bottom-half of the inning to close out the sweep. She is now 19-4 on the season with a 1.13 earned-run average.
