ESU Track & Field Continues Push Towards PSAC Meet at Moravian’s Coach P Invitational

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – East Stroudsburg University won nine events and posted nine new PSAC times in another strong team effort at Moravian's two-day Coach P Invitational which concluded on Saturday afternoon.

Seven of the nine event wins came on the men's side, while seven of the nine new PSAC efforts were registered by ESU women. This year's conference meet is now less than a month away, with day one of the three-day competition beginning on Thursday, May 4 at Bloomsburg.

The 10,000-meter runs began the Friday portion of the schedule, with Warrior runners taking first place in both events. Juniors Dan Buccino (32:54.81) and Jasmine Amro (39:55.46) each took over a minute off their previous season bests to book their spots at PSACs.

ESU also placed first in both the men's and women's 4x100m relays early on Saturday. Junior Ernest Pendleton, sophomore Akeim Thomas, senior Steve Morgan and sophomore Pat Monahan (42.38) teamed up for the victory for the men, while sophomore Marissa Flim, freshman Tiana Webster, sophomore Leiana Dean and freshman Morgan Dey (48.91) beat out 10 other teams in the women's race.

Freshman Anthony Del Popolo, freshman Andrew Schumacher, freshman Nick Lawrence and Thomas completed a relay sweep for the men in the 4x400m to conclude the meet, finishing the race in 3:23.56.

Three of the new PSAC marks for the women came in the throws, as freshman Alexis Schuldes (132-7) qualified in the hammer, freshman Jasmine Uzzell (37-0 1/4) surpassed the conference standard in the shot put and freshman Me'Saj Closs (117-2) joined Schuldes (117-6) in the PSAC field in the discus. Uzzell placed third out of 31 throwers with her top effort in the shot put.

ESU also placed two in the top five in the javelin. Sophomore Hannah Marth finished second with a PR heave of 129-5 which ranks her eighth in program history, while junior Taylor Watkins followed in third with a top distance of 122-10.

New women's PSAC qualifiers on the track included junior Kaylyn West (18:24.55, second of 25 runners) in the 5000m, Webster (25.92, third of 41) in the 200m and junior Samantha Young (2:21.78) in the 800m.

Flim (12.43) and junior Hope Decker (1:04.87) each lowered their PSAC times to take second place in the 100m and 400m hurdles, respectively, while senior Lauren Toth (2:20.22) placed fifth in the 800m with a new season-best effort.

Sophomore Khai Samuels took first out of 52 runners in the men's 800m with a new PSAC time of 1:56.60. He was closely followed by freshman Mike Sheptuk in third, who was just above the conference standard after crossing the line in 1:57.72.

Senior Steve Morgan (14.57), junior Christian Castro (15.13) and sophomore Mike Matrisciano (15.48) each qualified for the finals in the 110m hurdles, and Morgan would cruise to a first place finish later in the afternoon with a time of 14.60. The three-time defending PSAC champion in the event continues to hold the top mark among conference runners this season, with a current season-best of 14.44.

Schumacher had the final individual first place result on the track, as he registered a new season-best time of 55.27 in the 400m hurdles. Matrisciano also lowered his PSAC time in the event, taking third place after finishing in 56.01. Other top running efforts included Monahan, who placed second in the 100m dash final (10.85) and freshman Matt Lloyd, who took third out of 47 competitors in the 1500m with a time of 4:07.35 which just missed the PSAC standard.

Freshman Noah Lockwood turned in another strong week in the throws for the Warriors. He topped a field of 39 in the discus with a PR distance of 147-7 which ranks No. 8 all-time at ESU, and he also placed fifth out of 31 throwers in the shot put (46-7 1/2).

Freshman Austin Horner and junior Jonathan Hummel also raised their PSAC standards in the field. Horner was the runner-up in the long jump with a top distance of 21-9 1/2 which ranks second among conference jumpers this spring, and Hummel registered a new season-best in the javelin (175-2). He placed fifth in both the javelin and the hammer (145-4).

ESU completed the afternoon with a total of 31 top-five finishes and 31 PSAC marks.

Select Warriors will travel to Kutztown on Thursday and Friday to compete in the Mondschein Multi, while the full team will head to Bucknell for the Bison Open next Friday and Saturday.
