BRADENTON, Fla. – Senior
Steve Morgan ended his memorable East Stroudsburg University career in fitting fashion on Friday, shattering his own school record in the 110-meter hurdles and earning second team All-America accolades at the 2017 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships.
Morgan completed his heat in 14.23, taking a whopping 0.09 off his previous record time of 14.32 which was established in 2015. That time was good enough for 11th place in an overall field of 19 runners.
The ninth through 12th place finishers in the event each receive second team All-America status, while the top eight make the first team and advance to Saturday's final. Morgan moved up seven spots after entering the meet with the 18th fastest time this spring among those in the field.
The previous season-best for Morgan heading into the national meet was a time of 14.36 set at the Penn Relays in April. He becomes the 19th multiple-time All-American in ESU men's history after previously placing ninth in the 60m hurdles during the indoor season this winter. Morgan ran in the third of three heats on Friday, finishing fifth out of seven competitors in his race.
Morgan concludes his Warrior career with two NCAA Championship appearances, seven NCAA DII provisional times and six PSAC titles.
Earlier this spring, Morgan became the first student-athlete in men's program history to win four-straight PSAC titles in a single event, as he completed a four-year sweep of the 110m hurdles with a first place finish at Bloomsburg on May 6.
Morgan's six conference championships rank him third all-time in team history. He scored in 15 PSAC events overall (11 individual, 4 relay) during his time at ESU, a total which is tied for fourth all-time. Morgan was also a five-time PSAC Track Athlete of the Week.
Individually, Morgan leaves as the school record-holder in the 110m hurdles, and he teamed with junior
Christian Castro, sophomore
Akeim Thomas and sophomore
Mike Matrisciano to set a new ESU record in the shuttle hurdles (58.63) on April 28. That performance earned the foursome a first place finish at the Penn Relays, as ESU became only the second DII school in the last 22 years to win a Championship of America race at the historic meet.
The ESU men's track & field program has now sent at least one participant to the outdoor championships in every season since 2001. Morgan is the eighth Warrior in program history to reach the indoor and outdoor championships within the same season.
