EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior Desiree Claxton became the sixth player in program history to reach 1,000 kills for her career, accomplishing the feat in the third set of East Stroudsburg University's 3-1 win over Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday night.

Claxton ended the night with a team-high 15 kills overall. She is the first Warrior to reach the milestone since Alyson Stark in 2010.

With the victory, ESU (5-2) is off to its best start since the 2006 squad began the year with a 10-1 record. Sophomore Sarah Smith added nine kills and 11 digs, and senior Rosa Veliky, announced earlier today as this week's PSAC Southeast Athlete of the Week, contributed 31 digs defensively.

Breanne Haley had a match-high 21 kills to lead the offensive attack for the Lightning (1-4). Set scores for the contest were 25-19, 25-16, 23-25, 25-23.

The Warriors were outhit by the visitors in the opening set, but were aided by six Goldey-Beacom service errors. The last of those errors came on set point at 24-19. Claxton registered five of her 15 kills, backed by a .500 attack percentage to lead ESU.

The Warriors hit .300 as a team in a dominant second set, as they raced out to a 9-2 lead and never looked back. Smith capped the frame with her fourth kill of the night to help ESU open up a 2-0 advantage.

After the Lightning closed out a competitive third set to extend the match, the Warriors won eight of the first 10 points in the fourth to take control early on. Goldey-Beacom fought back, taking its first lead at 10-9 and maintaining a 17-13 edge midway through the frame.

ESU continued to trail by a 22-20 margin, when a Claxton kill began a 4-0 stretch to set up a pair of match points. Smith converted on the second of those points to give the Warriors a win in their 2017 home opener.

Claxton added 13 digs to finish with her 32nd career double-double. Sophomore Sam Dunphy (13) also reached double-digits defensively, while sophomore Jasmine Williams and senior Courtney Miller totaled five and four blocks, respectively. ESU controlled play at the net throughout, ending the night with a 9-2 advantage in blocks.

The Warriors remain at Koehler Fieldhouse for their next matchup, as they host Bloomfield at 7 p.m. on Friday.
