MILLERSVILLE - Senior forward
Melanie Shambaugh scored both goals as No. 1-ranked East Stroudsburg University improved to 7-1 with a 2-0 win at No. 6 Millersville in non-conference field hockey on Wednesday afternoon.
Shambaugh scored 12:06 into the second half, assisted by junior forward
Bailey Quinn, and again with 1:35 left for ESU, which is the top-ranked team in NCAA Division II for the second straight week.
The Warriors open PSAC action on Saturday at 12 p.m. vs. Mercyhurst. They will meet Millersville again in three weeks, this time in conference play, on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 3:30 p.m. at Whitenight Field.
ESU held advantages of 15-5 in shots and 8-3 in penalty corners, including 6-1 in shots and 4-0 in corners in a scoreless first half.
Shambaugh, who entered with three goals on the season, broke the tie at the 47:06 mark of the second half and added the insurance goal late in the contest.
Senior goalkeeper
Halle Frisco made three saves to post the shutout for the Warriors, their fifth shutout in the first eight games.
Autumn Peters made six saves, three in each half, for Millersville (3-2).
ESU topped the Marauders for the fourth time in the last five meetings, since the second regular season match-up during the Warriors' 2015 PSAC championship season which they won against Millersville. The Marauders knocked ESU out of the PSAC semifinals last year.
The previous five match-ups were all decided by a 1-0 scoreline.
ESU improves to 17-6 as the No. 1-ranked team in the NFHCA Division II poll.
The win is the 398th career victory for ESU head coach
Sandy Miller, who is two wins away from becoming the fourth coach in DII history with 400 career wins. She enters Saturday's PSAC opener with a career mark of 398-265-11 in her 34th season.
