EAST STROUDSBURG - Senior forward Melanie Shambaugh had two goals and an assist, leading No. 1-ranked East Stroudsburg University to a 7-2 win vs. Mercyhurst in the PSAC field hockey opener for both schools on Saturday afternoon at Whitenight Field.

Senior back Sydney McCarthy scored her seventh goal of the season, junior forward Makenna Marhefka added two tallies, and sophomore midfielder Karly Conway scored her first career goal for ESU (8-1, 1-0), which plays at No. 2 Shippensburg (5-1, 1-0) on Wednesday.

Junior forward Bailey Quinn also scored, and junior midfielder Paige Harrold had two assists.

ESU has shared the PSAC regular season title each of the last two years, both with 9-1 records, and improves to 19-2 in conference games since start of the 2015 season.

Shambaugh had her sixth and seventh goals of the year, after entering her senior season with two career goals, both last fall. She scored both goals in a 2-0 win at No. 6 Millersville on Wednesday.

McCarthy has seven goals, tied with Shambaugh for the team lead, and seven assists through the first nine games.

ESU head coach Sandy Miller, in her 34th year, improved to 399-265-1 and is one win from becoming the fourth NCAA Division II coach with 400 wins. She would also be the fourth in PSAC history.

McCarthy opened the scoring, assisted by Harrold, 12 minutes into the game before Mercyhurst (2-4, 0-1) struck to tie it at 1-1 on a goal by Clare Ahern seven minutes later.

The Warriors scored twice late in the first half, with Shambaugh assisting on Conway's goal and scoring herself, for a 3-1 halftime lead.

Marhefka scored 12 minutes into the second half, Quinn converted on an assist from Harrold three minutes later and Shambaugh scored her second two minutes after that and Marhekfa scored again for a quick four-goal flurry in just under 10 minutes and a 7-1 lead.

Paige Albright scored for Mercyhurst with 3:47 remaining to set the final margin.

ESU had a 27-7 advantage in shots, and a 7-5 edge in penalty corners.

Senior goalkeeper Halle Frisco had one save and allowed one goal in 54:32 before sophomore Maddie Richie played the final 15:28, with two saves and one goal allowed.

Victoria Triaga started and made seven saves, allowing six goals, in 52:20 for the Lakers.

ESU won its first match-up with Shippensburg, 2-0, on September 6 at Whitenight Field on goals McCarthy and Shambaugh and eight saves from Frisco.

The Warriors and Raiders will potentially play their fourth "1 vs. 2" match-up in the last two years, which would be officially set after this week's NFHCA DII poll is released on Tuesday. ESU is 3-1 vs. Shippensburg since the start of last fall, winning all three regular season meetings and falling 2-1 in last year's NCAA Tournament first round, with Ship going on to win the national title.
