SHIPPENSBURG - No. 2-ranked Shippensburg scored three times in the second half to pull away from a 1-1 tie, posting a 4-1 win over No. 1 East Stroudsburg University in PSAC field hockey on Wednesday afternoon at the Robb Sports Complex.
Emily Barnard scored a pair of goals for Shippensburg (7-1, 2-0) in the fourth "1 vs. 2" meeting between the two schools in the last 13 months. The Warriors had won the previous three, including a 2-0 win on September 6 at Whitenight Field.
Senior back
Sydney McCarthy scored her eighth goal of the season for ESU (8-2, 1-1), which suffered just its third PSAC loss in the last three seasons. The Warriors have shared the last two PSAC regular season titles with a 9-1 conference record.
Senior goalkeeper
Halle Frisco had 12 saves for the Warriors, including 10 in the first half, as Ship built advantages of 19-4 in shots and 14-2 in penalty corners in the opening 35 minutes but were limited to just one goal.
Barnard scored the game's first goal 9:55 in before McCarthy tied it at 1-1 just under five minutes later, assisted by junior back
Amanda Crampton.
ESU had seven of the first eight shots in the second half, but Ship posted a pair of goals in a span of 1:41 midway through the period to open a 3-1 lead. Barnard scored with 17:04 left, and Rebecca Bouyea struck with 15:23 remaining, before Jazmin Petrantonio iced the game on a penalty stroke at the 10:37 mark.
Frisco played the first 54:37 and was relieved by sophomore
Maddie Richie, who had one save and was in the cage for the Ship penalty stroke. Crampton and McCarthy were credited with defensive saves.
Ally Mooney made eight saves for Shippensburg, which finished with margins of 31-14 in shots and 20-6 in penalty corners.
ESU maintains a 3-2 series lead vs. Shippensburg since the start of last season. The Warriors won both regular season meetings in overtime in 2016 before falling 2-1 in the NCAA Division II Tournament first round.
ESU head coach
Sandy Miller remains at 399 career wins (399-266-11 in 34 seasons) and can become the fourth coach in PSAC and DII history with 400 career wins on Saturday as the Warriors travel to IUP.
The Warriors are now 4-1 in "1 vs. 2" match-ups in the last three seasons. They fall to 18-7 when playing with the No. 1 ranking in DII.
