LEWISBURG, Pa. – Senior
Christian Castro registered NCAA Division II provisional times in both the 60-meter hurdles and the 200 dash to lead a strong day for East Stroudsburg University at Saturday's Gulden Invitational at Bucknell.
The Warrior men and women combined to secure 11 new PSAC marks while also bettering six previous conference qualifiers.
Castro was named the meet's Track MVP after his career-best performance. He won the 200m with a time of 22.05 that ranks No. 4 all-time at ESU and was nearly a half-second under his previous PR of 22.46.
The Vineland, N.J., native first established a new PR of 8.13 in the preliminary round of the 60 hurdles. He lowered that mark down to 8.08 while placing second in the finals, moving up to No. 3 all-time in program history in the event. Castro currently ranks 11th in DII in the 200m, and he is tied for eighth in the 60 hurdles.
ESU had several other standout efforts on the afternoon, with junior
Aspen Gaita, sophomore
Me'Saj Closs and senior
Kaylyn West among the headliners on the women's side.
Gaita lowered her NCAA DII provisional time in the 60 hurdles down to 8.73 while placing second in this afternoon's final. That mark is currently tied for 14th in DII this season.
Closs registered a new PR in the weight throw for a third-consecutive meet, as she took third place out of 23 throwers with a top toss of 51-2 1/4 that ranks No. 2 all-time at ESU. Closs is just under four feet back of Elizabeth Madden's school-record throw of 55-3 1/2 from 2014.
West topped a field of 12 runners in the 800m, crossing the line in a new PSAC-qualifying time of 2:20.10. The result is two seconds back of her PR of 2:18.26 which is No. 3 all-time.
Other new PSAC marks for the women included junior
Michayla Weitman (9.64) in the 60 hurdles, sophomore
Tiana Webster (7.97) in the 60 dash, senior
Samantha Young (5:17.58) in the mile and sophomore
Alexis Schuldes (42-6 3/4) in the weight throw.
The Warrior women added new season-bests in both relay events. Sophomore Sarah Klah, sophomore
Allyson Stitzer, Gaita and junior
Shante Dorin (3:58.09) posted the No. 8 time in program history in the 4x400m relay, while freshman
Brittany Carratura, junior
Victoria Matthews, Young and West managed a time of 9:49.91 in the 4x800m relay.
Other top five individual efforts included junior
Marissa Flim, who was second in the 60 dash (7.82) and Gaita, who was fourth in the long jump (17-10 3/4).
The men finished with a total of six new PSAC marks. Five of those came on the track, and two were by razor-thin margins. Senior
Jeremy Rigotti's time of 9:06.12 was 0.16 under the PSAC standard in the 3000m, and freshman
Jordan Cruise's finish of 4:30.33 was just over a second lower than the PSAC time of 4:31.42 in the mile.
Other new PSAC times included junior
Khai Samuels in the 800m (1:57.21), junior
J.P. Montgomery in the 5000m (15:52.37) and sophomore
Jeremy Smith in the 5000m (15:56.51). Sophomore
Austin Horner managed the new PSAC mark in the field, as his clearance of 6-3 1/2 placed him third overall in the high jump.
Freshman
Dan Amari and sophomore
Noah Lockwood also bettered their PSAC standards in the field, with Amari clearing 14-3 1/4 in the pole vault while Lockwood had a throw of 48-8 1/4 in the shot put. Lockwood placed fourth out of 22 throwers in that event, one spot back of freshman
Dominic Walton (50-6 3/4) in third.
The lone ESU men's relay to compete on Saturday registered a season-best time, as Cruise, sophomore
Andrew Lopez, junior
Jared Glosser and senior
Zack Krieger completed the 4x800m relay in 8:31.86.
Two events are on the schedule for the track & field program next weekend. Select members will compete at Dr. Sander Invitational/Columbia Challenge at the Armory Track in New York City on Friday and Saturday. Others will take part in Lehigh's John Covert Classic on Saturday.
