KUTZTOWN - Redshirt sophomore
Mike Raccioppi won a nationally-ranked match-up against Millersville's Shane Ruhnke as East Stroudsburg University split a pair of matches at the Kutztown Duals on Friday.
Millersville edged ESU, 19-18, on criteria before the Warriors posted a 22-18 win over Minot State (N.D.). On Saturday, ESU will wrestle American International in a Super Region 1 match-up at 12:30 p.m., followed by UNC Pembroke at 2 p.m.
Raccioppi, ranked No. 5 in Division II at 165 pounds and No. 1 in the region, won a 7-6 decision vs. Ruhnke, ranked No. 9 in DII and No. 2 in the region. Raccioppi improves to 14-2 on the season, remained perfect (10-0) vs. DII competition and has won 11 of his last 12 matches since mid-November with the only loss to Lock Haven's nationally-ranked (DI) Chance Marsteller in the PSAC final on December 9.
Raccioppi was one of four Warriors to go 2-0 on Friday night, along with redshirt sophomore
Francesco Palagruto (141), freshman
Marquan Payne (157) and freshman
Dillon Warner (174).
Raccioppi won by major decision (17-7) in the dual win vs. Minot State and has nine bonus point wins (4 falls, 1 tech fall, 4 majors) among his 14 wins this season.
Freshman
Victor Lopez opened the Millersville dual with a first-period pin (1:57) of Aaron Wildonger, ranked No. 8 in the region, in his first action since the PSAC championships.
Palagruto, Payne, Raccioppi and Warner all won by decision as ESU built an 18-6 lead through seven bouts, but two decisions and a fall at 197 pulled Millersville even at 18-18. The Marauders won the match on "Criteria C", total match points, by a 46-40 margin.
Against Minot State, freshman
Peter Nace won by injury default at 133, Palagruto and Payne won by decision, Raccioppi by major decision and Warner by decision for a 19-9 lead. Sophomore
Daniel Makagon posted a 4-2 win at 197 to seal the victory.
Payne, ranked No. 8 in the region at 157, has won six straight to improve to 9-5 on the season, 7-3 in duals, and 6-3 vs. DII competition.
Warner, also No. 8 in the region at 174, has opened 4-1 since joining the Warriors for the second semester.
