BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior
Christian Castro matched the program record in the 60-meter dash, and three Warriors raced to first place finishes on the track for East Stroudsburg University at Lehigh's John Covert Classic on Saturday.
Castro took second place in a field of 66 runners after completing the race in a new PSAC qualifying time of 6.98. That mark matches junior
Pat Monahan's ESU record which was established at last year's PSAC Indoor Championships, and it is the second-quickest time by a PSAC runner in the 60m this season.
Senior
Kaylyn West, sophomore
Sarah Klag and junior
Khai Samuels registered the event wins for the Warriors. West beat out 41 other runners in the mile, and her PSAC qualifying time of 5:11.00 was over six seconds ahead of Rowan's Hannah Vendetta (5:17.94) in second place.
Klag completed the 400m in a time of 1:00.79 which was only 0.20 off her season-best. That ranked her first in a field of 56 competitors. West and Klag completed a memorable weekend after teaming up yesterday with senior
Samantha Young and junior
Shante Dorin for an ESU record and NCAA Division II provisional time of 12:04.60 in the Distance Medley Relay on the Armory Track in Manhattan.
Samuels, meanwhile, entered the ESU record books after topping the field in the 1000m. His time of 2:32.80 is the eighth-quickest in program history in that event.
Including Castro and West's performances, the Warriors added a total of nine new PSAC qualifying marks on the afternoon. Two of those came in the men's 60m hurdles, as junior
Mike Matrisciano crossed the line in 8.63 while sophomore
Austin Horner followed in 8.84.
Other new qualifications for the men included sophomore
Darnell Randall in the high jump (6-4 3/4) and freshman
Jordan Cruise in the 800m (1:59.82).
Freshman
Dominic Walton had already qualified for PSAC's in the shot put, but he bettered his ESU freshman record in the event with a top toss of 51-9. Walton, who placed third out of 51 throwers on Saturday, originally broke the 36-year old freshman mark with a toss of 51-1 on Jan. 12.
Sophomore
Sarah Smith was among the new PSAC qualifiers on the women's side, as she booked her spot in the conference meet with a clearance of 5-1 in the high jump. Two Warriors finished in the top five in that event, as junior
Aspen Gaita (5-3) took second in the field of 28 while junior
Carly Gregas (5-1) was tied for third.
Sophomore
Alexis Schuldes added a season-best PSAC distance of 43-0 1/2 in the weight throw. On the track, new PSAC qualifiers were Young in the 800m (2:23.01) and junior
Marissa Flim in the 200m (26.45). Flim's personal-best performance placed her fourth in a deep field of 73 runners.
The Warriors concluded the day with two strong efforts in the 4x400m relay. The men's team of sophomore
Andrew Schumacher, freshman
Omari Slocombe, freshman
Jordan Duncan-Murphy and Matrisciano took second place with a time of 3:30.86, while the women's foursome of Klag, junior
Leiana Dean, sophomore
