ESU Wrestling Earns 25-19 Dual Win at Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG - East Stroudsburg University earned three wins by bonus points to post a 25-19 verdict at Shippensburg in PSAC and NCAA Division II Super Region 1 wrestling on Tuesday night at Heiges Field House.

Freshman Victor Lopez won by technical fall at 125 pounds, senior Christian Silva won by fall at 157 and redshirt sophomore Mike Raccioppi, ranked No. 5 in DII at 165 pounds, won by technical fall for the Warriors.

Redshirt sophomore Francesco Palagruto won by decision at 141, and freshman Peter Nace won by forfeit at 133 pounds.

Both squads took five matches, but ESU built a 25-3 lead through the first six bouts before Ship won the last four. Three of Ship's five wins were by decision.

Lopez opened the night with a 21-5 (6:04) technical fall vs. David Reagan at 125 to improve to 11-7 overall, and 7-3 in duals. He earned his sixth bonus point win of the year, adding the technical fall to five falls.

After Nace received a forfeit at 133, Palagruto used a pair of first-period takedowns and four near-fall points for a 10-6 decision over Cole Rush at 141. Rush entered No. 8 in the Super Region 1 rankings at 133.

Silva notched his third career dual win with a first-period fall vs. Sean Donahue at 157, decking the Raiders grappler in 1:16.

Raccioppi - ranked No. 1 in the region at 165 - improved to 16-3 on the season, 11-1 in duals and 12-1 vs. DII competition with his technical fall (21-6, 7:00) vs. Chris Miller. Ten of his 16 wins are by bonus points with four falls, two tech falls and four major decisions.

Ship won decisions at 149 - Cody Blankenship 6-4 vs. redshirt junior Blake Cohen, 174 - Ryan Narber 8-6 vs. freshman Dillon Warner, and 184 - Alexi Castro 12-10:sv1 vs. senior Paul Rallis.

At 197, Ship's No. 3-ranked Evan Ramos, a two-time national qualifier and 2017 All-America, pinned sophomore Daniel Makagon in 1:19.

Derek Berberick finished the night for Ship with a 9-1 major decision over freshman Hunter Marhan at 285.

ESU earned its second straight dual win over Shippensburg, following a 21-19 decision last year, after Ship had won the previous five meetings.

The Warriors host Kutztown in conference and regional action on Friday at 7 p.m. at Koehler Fieldhouse.
