EAST STROUDSBURG –
Alex Pickett registered a goal and an assist on her Senior Night, including the game-winner in the 63rd minute, as East Stroudsburg University earned a 3-2 victory over Clarion at a wet Eiler-Martin Stadium on Saturday.
Juniors
Danielle Cary and
Monica Wood also scored for the Warriors (12-5-1, 11-4-1 PSAC) who closed out the regular season with a second-consecutive victory. ESU will begin its quest for a fifth-straight conference title in the quarterfinal round on Tuesday, with time, location and opponent TBD based on the outcome of a West Chester/IUP contest tomorrow afternoon.
Dani McNally and Veronika Noyszewski had the goals for Clarion (3-14-1, 2-14 PSAC), with Noyszewski's strike occurring with 48 seconds remaining in regulation.
Pickett,
Carly Abbott,
Nicole Abbott and
Danielle Curran were each recognized prior to their final regular season collegiate home game, and all four were in the starting lineup at opening kickoff.
Cary opened up the scoring 19:25 in, taking a pass from junior
Jules Sicker and beating Golden Eagle goalkeeper Krista Mosi with a low shot to the left side. Wood doubled the advantage 10 minutes later, blasting a pass from Pickett into the top left corner.
Wood picked up her team-leading eighth goal of the season, while Pickett now has a team-high seven assists in 2018.
McNally tucked in Clarion's first goal 3:35 after the intermission, but Pickett restored the two-goal margin in midway through the half. Sophomore Hailey Skove's initial effort was deflected by Mosi off the crossbar right to Pickett, who headed the ball into an open goal.
Pickett is now alone in sixth place all-time in program history with 28 goals, and she remains in sixth place in the ESU record books with 74 career points (28 G, 18 A).
Freshman goalkeeper
Mauri Jackson made five saves to improve her season record to 11-3. The Warriors improved to 11-1-2 lifetime against Clarion.
At 34 points, ESU is currently in a three-way tie with Seton Hill and Lock Haven for fourth place in the PSAC standings. A West Chester win on Sunday would make it a four-way tie. The Golden Rams' contest at IUP is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
