EAST STROUDSBURG – Two-time defending Division II national champions Shippensburg has two defeats this season, and both of them have come to East Stroudsburg University.
Freshman
Celeste Veenstra scored in the first half, and seniors
Bailey Quinn and
Makenna Marhefka added insurance strikes after the intermission to send the Warriors to a 3-0 victory over the Raiders in the PSAC opener for both teams on Wednesday.
No. 3 ESU (6-2, 1-0) prevented No. 4 Shippensburg (6-2, 0-1) from generating a single shot on goal in the win. The Warriors earned a 4-0 victory when the teams met in the non-conference portion of their schedule on Sept. 19.
"I'm really proud of our team's effort," head coach
Sandy Miller said. "They put the work in from start to finish. Shippensburg is a phenomenal program, and for us to get another shutout is an outstanding result.
Karisa Turner did a great job shutting down their top player throughout."
Shippensburg's Jazmin Petrantonio, who was named PSAC Freshman of the Year in 2017 and entered leading Division II with 27 points (12 G, 3 A), was held to a single shot on the afternoon.
Both teams struggled to generate much offensively in the opening 35 minutes, combining for a total of three shots. ESU, though, made one of its two shots count, as Veenstra deflected a long-distance shot from freshman
Hannah Barbush into the back of the cage 7:03 into the contest.
Veenstra scored her second goal in as many games, while Barbush recorded her first collegiate point.
The Warriors piled on the pressure after the intermission, outshooting the Raiders by a 9-1 margin and earning seven of the half's eight penalty corners. That pressure helped lead to a penalty stroke opportunity at 37:56, and Quinn calmly lifted a shot into the top corner to double ESU's advantage.
Marhefka rounded out the scoring with just over 20 minutes remaining, deflecting in a shot by junior
Grace Martini from the top of the circle. Quinn and Marhefka each tallied their fourth goals of the year; they are now tied with senior
Paige Harrold for the team lead.
Junior
Maddie Richie contributed to ESU's fifth shutout of the year without needing to make a save in goal. The Warriors have recorded clean sheets in five of their past six games overall.
ESU returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Mercyhurst for a game scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. The Warriors won 6-0 when the two teams met at Whitenight Field back on Sept. 22.
